Healthy life is very important and we should be caring about their health or will face the bad side or consequences of the unhealthy life. Maintaining our health from our head's hair to our feet fingers is important, a minor issue to affect your whole body.

Q: What are salivary glands and what is their classification?

  • Salivary glands, very important glands in our body, salivary glands produce saliva in our mouth. The watery liquid in our mouth is saliva; saliva is produced by these salivary glands. These glands are present under the tongue and at the end of the tongue just above it. These glands produces saliva.

Q: What is the function of the salivary glands?
  • Saliva keeps our mouth wet and moisturized, it contains antibiotics; affective against harmful bacteria and virus, and it contains amylase enzymes; these breakdown starch into sugars. Starch are carbohydrates. Saliva glands are very important, without it our mouth would be dry, moreover, it helps in digestion. The liquid nature helps in movement food in our mouth and no food particles are left in our mouth.

Q: What are the elements that make up saliva and what is the route from its production to the oral cavity.

  • Saliva is 99% of water and 1% is other chemicals, it contains enzymes like amylase for breaking down carbohydrates.

Parotid , Submandibular and Sublingual glands produce saliva.

  • These glands are present in the mouth and produce saliva directly in the mouth.

Q: What pathologies can occur in the salivary glands?

Following are pathologies

Cystsa fluid filled type of sacs which are created in the mouth near salivary glands and are problematic
SialolithiasisA salivary stone or small pebble type which creates swelling or pain in the mouth
XerostomiaThis is a type problem in which the mouth is dried or the there is a feeling of dryness.
TumorsTumor is also built sometime in the mouth which lead to mouth cancer.


Salivary glands are very important glands in the mouth, these glands are responsible for many activities; like saliva production, amylaze for carbohydrates breakdown and other chemical which keeps the mouth clean. Other importance includes keeping the mouth wet and providing alkaline nature. So, these nature of the salivary glands are important for the body and whenever we feel a bad condition in our mouth so we should consult a doctor for solving the issues.
