Hello family and friends👋, it's my pleasure to share my knowledge on lung cancer as I have had an uncle who died of lung cancer. I was in my junior secondary class 3(three) when it happened and as at then I did not really understand until later. I want to appreciate @khursheedanwar for organising this contest.

What is Lung Cancer?

Lung cancer is a deadly illness that begins in the human lung. The lungs is the internal organ in our body that enables us to breath and exchange oxygen with carbon dioxide. This disease take place in the body when some cells in the lung becomes abnormal and grow uncontrollably which will form a tumor in the lung.

I have learnt that in healthy lungs, cells grows and die in an orderly manner but when new cells grow abnormally they invade the surrounding tissues and spread to other parts of the body causing a tumor.

There are two main types of lung cancer which includes:

  1. Large cell lung cancer
  2. Small cell lung cancer

There are stages of lung cancer and the stage of my late uncle's own had grown up-to stage-3 which the tumor had grown larger and had spread to lymph nodes on the opposite side of his chest. I believe if we had realized it at stage-1 where the tumor was still small and located in one lung, it would have been easier and less expensive to treat.

Causes of Cancer

Lung cancer is very risky disease that can be caused by genetic and environmental factors. Some of the causes of lung cancer are;

  1. Smoking: I believe that my late uncle's own was caused by smoking because he was a chronic smoker. He will smoke first thing in the morning instead of brushing his teeth first. He didn't care about people's advice to him but continued smoking until he was diagnosed with lung cancer.
  2. Being exposed to secondhand smoke.
  3. Family history of lung cancer.
  4. Radiation from previous chest therapy. Etc.

Symptoms of Lung Cancer

How do one know that he or she has lung cancer? These are few signs to take note.

  1. When you cough persistently and the cough continue to worsen as time goes.
  2. You start to have chest, shoulder or back pain or discomfort
  3. You start to loose weight that you cannot explain.
  4. You may have difficulty in breathing.
  5. You will often feel weak and tired even when you are doing no work.

Possible Treatment of Lung Cancer

Our health is very important so we need to always pay attention to our body so that we can detect deadly signs early enough. These are few ways of treating lung cancer;

  1. Visit the hospital and run some imaging tests like x-ray and other scans.
  2. Go for a sampling of lung tissue for examination.
  3. If you have the money, go for removal of the tumor or affected lung tissue.
  4. If you detect it earlier you can take medications to kill the cancer cells as prescribed by the medical doctor. Etc

Our health is important as far as life is concerned so lets keep advising smokers to quit smoking. We should also stay away from smoke-filled areas and try to run culture tests once in a while to know the state of our health.
