Hello Healthy Steemians

I'm coming to you all from the beautiful countryside known as Cameroon and i will be presenting to you some of my knowledge on Painkillers i found this post created by @sahmie with the help of @disconnect. We live in a world that is so developed that we have created lots of scientific advancement in medicine most especially one of them being pain medicine which i will be talking about in this presentation so stick with me to know what says about Painkillers as i answer the contest questions to the best of everyone's understanding..

What are painkillers?

Painkillers are medications used to relieve an individuals pain, they come in various forms and states some can be hard tablets, capsules, liquids (injectable or syrups) and semi liquid such are creams and rubs. Each of these states have their applications.

  • Tablets are taken orally and go through the Gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and bypass the liver before reaching the desired site of action.

  • Capsules Are more similar to drugs due to the route they take but they are more effective due to their powdered form which makes it easier to digest and absorbed.

  • Syrups Liquid painkiller that is ingested and passes through the GIT to the site of action. More effective than capsules and tablets.

  • Injectables Liquid painkillers which are administered either intravenously or intramuscularly. They go directly to the site of action and as you know it, they are more effective than the latter.

  • Creams and rubs are semi liquid painkillers which applied topically on the site of action, are very quick to act as it calms the nerves around the immediate site of pain.

What do you think are the most common reasons people use painkillers?

They are a few reasons people use painkillers and i will be highlighting them. People take painkillers for..

Pains Releiving

Pain is an uncomfortable sensations which can either be emotional or physical and can be caused by a torn tissue or a psychological injury.

Pain can either be chronic, acute, neuropathic or nociceptive depending on the severity and the tissue involved.

Chronic pain is long term pain which lasts more than 6 months. This is experienced by patients which an underlying medical condition. Examples includes Arthritis, backaches, myalgia.

Acute Pain is short term pain that can be caused by injuries. These includes headaches, toothaches, menstrual cramps, neuropathic pains

Pre and Post Surgery

Surgeries can be very painful without analgesics or painkillers so they are administered before surgeries to keep the patient sedated and after to make them feel less pains from the effect of the surgery.

How do you feel about the difference between over-the-counter painkillers and prescription ones

First let me define each term accordingly...

Over-the-counter painkillers are those bought off from pharmacies without any form of medical consultation from a Doctor, they are usually general painkillers and so can be used by everyone for any form of pain.

Prescription painkillers are those prescribed by a Physician who has done a thorough examination of the patient's condition and decided on a suitable pain treatment.

Can you think of any natural alternatives to painkillers that people might use?

Although painkillers are very effective against in treating pain, natural alternatives also exists some are mere activities which we can perform we have;

Acupuncture which work directly on the nerves of the affected area, using very tiny needles an acupuncturist can easily attend to pain affected areas.

Ice Bathes this is a natual means used for general body pains, immersing oneself in an ice bathe effectively numbs the nerves and tissues which produce pain.

A long rest though not always used, it is still advised as one of the most natural alternatives to painkillers.

What do you think are the risks of using painkillers too often?

It is saud that too much of something isn't good for the body, that saying also applies to something such as this. Using painkillers too often has negative effects to the body such as;

Adaptation The body is a formidable machine which can adapt to drugs once it notices its presence too often, this makes the painkillers ineffective at some point and can lead to other severe problems.

Toxins painkillers also have toxins since they are made of chemicals but these toxins are reduced and are immediately removed by the kidneys, but too much intake of painkillers can cause an accumulated efffect of these toxins in the body leading to severe health problems.

Conclusion

Painkillers are an evolutionary treatment to pain, but it should be noted that their after effects can ve very serious especially during long term use or withouth the Physicians instructions. I have come to the end of my presentation and I'm inviting @rafk, @patjewel and @chant to join me on this contest.
