Steem greetings from the motherland-Cameroon, welcome to my blog as I share my thoughts about the topic for this week's engagement challenge. The topic focuses on "How can alcohol cause damage to your health?"

Many people think that alcohol has to do only with the liquor we consume, forgetting to know that there are some foods that we eat daily that contain alcohol which is not beneficial to our health. That said, my analysis will dwell on the guiding questions that follow.

When can we say that a person is an alcoholic? Give reasons for your answer!

In life, anything that one consumes in excess is not good for our health. Consuming alcohol is not a bad thing because as humans, our bodies need alcohol to function well. However, taking excess of it, makes you an alcoholic person.

An alcoholic person I can say is the kind of a person who cannot do without alcohol. It's like alcohol is part of their blood and they cannot stay a day without drinking excess of it to the extent that they cannot have any meaningful discussion.

An alcoholic person prioritizes alcohol over food or water. If you have someone whose priority is alcohol, he/she does not care about anything else apart from his/her alcohol. I had an alcoholic uncle who even on his sick bed, takes medications with alcohol.

A person can be termed an alcoholic when he or she starts drinking uncontrollably while struggling with finances. They turn to struggle with finances not to cater for themselves but to drink liquor.

Do you think alcohol is a drug? justify your answer!

Alcohol can be considered a drug depending on the amount consumed. When consumed in excess, it turns out to be more dangerous to our health.

It can be considered a drug when consumed in small quantities as it helps stimulate our activeness and causes some timid people to be courageous and become talkative.

However, when it is consumed in excess, it causes serious damage to our health. Take for instance consuming excess alcohol during pregnancy, which causes serious damage to the baby’s health.

Can alcoholism be considered a disease? How to control it!

Of course, alcoholism is a disease because it causes mental health disparities. This causes someone to behave abnormally. Notwithstanding, it can be controlled in the following ways;

  • Drink responsibly and do not abuse alcohol. Drinking responsibly makes you accountable for mental well-being.
  • Prioritize your health to the dangers of alcohol. Your health should matter first before thinking of drinking to death. Taking excess alcohol does not help you to forget your pains as many believe but rather frustrates your goals.
  • Lastly, mind the type of people you hang out with as friends. Most often, having an alcoholic friend turns you into an alcoholic person.

Is every drinker considered an alcoholic?

Not everyone who drinks alcohol is considered an alcoholic person. As I earlier said, drinking alcohol is not bad but taking too much of it is a disease. If you can drink a bit of alcohol, your mental health is intact and does not influence your behaviour.

However, in the case of someone who can barely go a day without consuming lots of alcohol, this person can be considered an alcoholic person. They drink at any given time and do not have a limit to what they consume as alcohol.

In sum, alcohol is not bad in the sense that every human being needs a certain amount of alcohol in their system. However, consuming alcohol uncontrollably makes it a disease as it causes serious damage to our mental health. This is the end of my presentation and I will invite @majerius, @saxopedia, @josepha, @crismenia and @paholags to share their knowledge about the topic.

Very sure, the kind of friends majorly determine our lifestyle. We cannot continue to mingle with those with awkward lifestyles and expect a decent one.

Alcoholism is a disease. It affects both our mental and physical health. It is important we abstain of be in the line moderation

Thanks for inviting me, I have participated. Too much alcohol is bad. Best of luck to you.

I completely agree with you that we will call a person an alcoholic, who cannot live without alcohol. His morning and evening are spent only with alcohol. We will classify those people as drunkards who abuse, misbehave, create drama, raise their hands on their own children, etc. while intoxicated. To get rid of this, it is very important for a person to control his will power. Best wishes for your success.

Hola amiga 👋

I really appreciate the way you choose to place a balance between the positive side of alcohol and its bad. Young ones are advised to refrain from the pressure to do this as alcohol can still have effect on us in the long run even when taken in moderation. Thanks for sharing. Wishing you best of luck in this challenge and looking forward to reading more of your posts
