Greetings to my amazing friends and steemians of this lovely community. The eye is one of the sensory organs that allows us to see. This is made possible when the eye captures visible light from its surroundings and turns it into a form that enables the brain to create a sense of vision. The eye is a very delicate and complex organ that any act of negligence or trauma could result to either temporary or permanent blindness.
Thanks @ahsansharif for organizing this contest on "eye sores" as this will educate us on its causes and how best it can be managed.
What is sore eyes?
A sore eye is a painful feeling in the eye with could either be mild or severe. Sometimes, these pains go on their own even without medical attention. Sore eye is also known as ophthalmalgia. Pains in the eye can be a result of several causes which include; glaucoma, foreign object in the eyes, corneal abrasions,, sinusitis, conjunctivitis, blepharitis, iritis.
Other causes of sore eyes include overexposure to electronic screens, exposure to sun, exposure of airborne irritants, excessive rubbing, contact lenses, swimming in chlorinated water or even smokes from cigarettes.
Common symptoms include; eye feels gritty or sandy, dull throbbing or pressure pushing against the eye, swollen eyes, shooting pain in the eyes or a burning sensation in the eyes
What advice can you give to deal with eye strain or irritation? Especially for those who spend a lot of time on screens?
Eye irritation refers to eye discomfort, itchiness or dryness of the eyes which could be as a result of some factors which have been stated above. Eye irritation normally gets better quickly when one uses over-the-counter eye drops or even some home remedies.
For people having eye strain or irritation, they should follow these simple number of actions:
- Try to avoid touching or rubbing your eyes.
- Drink enough water to keep yourself hydrated.
- Ensure you get sufficient sleep to enable your body and eyes have some rest too.
- Avoid using contact lenses when eyes are infected.
- Avoid the use of makeup if eyes are infected.
- Wear sunshade when outside.
- For those who stay in front of electronic screens for a long period of time, it is always advisable to take your eyes off the screen every 20minutes and focus on distant objects of approximately 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This is called the 20:20:20 rule.
- Ensure to always check the lighting and reduce glare as bright light and prolonged glares can strain the eyes.
- Adjust screen settings to larger font size that is easily readable without having to strain the eyes.
What tips do you have for them?
For individual's having eye strain or irritation or for those who sit for a long period under the screen, these symptoms could be relieved by natural products such as omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil. But if symptoms didn't improve with self-care, it is recommended that appointment be booked with an eye specialist.
I'm inviting @ashley-p @owulama and @vickyson to also participate in this contest.
