What is paralysis?
The case of paralysis is a medical condition that results to the failure of muscles to work in a certain part of the body meaning that one cannot control the part. Muscle paralysis is normally as a result of an injury or disease of the nervous system particularly the spine or the brain. Paralysis can be temporary or permanent and it can be either complete or incomplete, affecting one limb or particular area of the body or it could encompass the entire body. This can be due to causes like stroke, paralysis due to injury in spinal cord or brain, multiple sclerosis and diseases like polio.
Treating patients with paralysis largely entails handling specifics such as physical therapy, the use of other equipment, and sometimes surgery. The effects of paralysis differ from one person to the other due to the extent of the disability resulting to difference in movement, level of restraint, and general quality of life.
Write about its types?
Paralysis entails a state whereby one is unable to move part of the body or the whole body due to some damage on the nervous system. Paralysis is of many types and each type has its own way of affecting different parts of the body. Monoplegia is the condition that causes paralysis of one limb; hemiplegia is the one that impacts the side of the body. Spinal cord injury in this case leads to the impairing of voluntary motor and sensory functions in the lower extremities and could be accompanied by the lower abdomen and lower back. Tetraplegia or quadriplegia impacts on the four extremities and is most commonly associated with the cervical region of the spine.
Paralysis may be of a transient nature or may become permanent depending on the cause. Some of the causes of foot drop are a stroke, spinal cord injury, nerve damage, and diseases such as multiple sclerosis. Paralysis treatment is centered on the therapeutic techniques, occupational, physical therapy, and other movements devices to increase function and quality of life of the paralyzed.
How long it takes to recover from paralysis?
The recovery period of paralysis depends on the cause, the extent of paralysis, and the patient’s characteristics. Certain individuals can get partial or full relief within several weeks to months and with high-caliber physical therapy and rehabilitation. However, in other cases, it can be a process that lasts for years or it becomes permanent in some cases.
They are the severity of the actual nerve injury and the location of the injury, the patient’s overall health and the patient’s dedication towards a number of physiotherapy sessions. It means that with proper early treatment, constant doctor’s control, along with psychological and physical support from relatives and friends, the rehabilitation is likely to be much more effective.
