Monkeypox, what do you know about it?

To me what i know about monkeypox is that it is a rare disease that is caused by the monkeypox virus, which belong to Orthopoxvirus genus where small pox virus also belongs. The situation is prevalent in most African countries particularly central and western Africa with many cases scattered throughout the world and It is passed to humans from animals such as rodents and non human primates and it has symptoms such as fever, muscle aches and a rash on the skin.

That being said, monkeypox is not as serious as smallpox, yet it can cause complications still. As a rule it runs a benign course and most of its victims regain their health in a few weeks. It is more like a chronic condition in which treatment is directed toward stabilizing the patient’s condition and preventing complication. Measures that can be used in preventing infection include not touching live animals that have the disease, washing hands, and taking smallpox vaccine.

However, transmission from one person to another is not easy, and hence outbreaks are easily controlled with public intervention. Isolation or quarantine is very essential to contain the occurrence of monkeypox.

What role does the WHO play in response to a global alert?

The world health organization (WHO) has a central responsibility in issues to do with global health risks since it has the mandate of organizing collaborative measures towards managing health hazards. During a global alert phase, the world health organization assist countries to develop response measures, assess the risks involved and coordinate information exchange among countries.

The organization also secures funds, sends people to the needed concentration and assists nations in putting measures that help contain the spread of diseases into practice. Besides, world health organization works together with its collaborators like CDC and other organization to increase surveillance capacities, conduct research and search for vaccines or therapies in case of the observed threatening health risks aiming at protecting world population’s health.

How can I detect it? If I have it, should I isolate myself?

Monkeypox has some of the similar symptoms like rashes, fever, muscle aches and headache among them but if you want to be diagnosed of monkeypox my advice to you is that you should consult a healthcare provider to carry out some medical tests because it will ensure one avoids further spreading of the disease especially if he or she is a suspected case of the disease.

Isolation may help in avoiding spreading of the disease to light the general public also but try and comply with medical-prescribed modalities on how to handle and contain the disease so that it does not infect other people.
