Introduction

It's true that everyone has a bad habit, whether you believe it or not, you do have one. So do I. Bad habits can be inherited or copied from people. Do you know that we consciously or unconsciously engage in some habits? Consciously, that means you know it. Unconsciously, it never occurs to you, it's a bad habit and no one has called your attention to it. So, that's how it is.

That a particular lifestyle feels good to you doesn't mean that the lifestyle is alright or generally accepted. The question is, what should we do if we have bad habits? That's why we are here to discuss.

What are some bad habits that are hard to stop, and why is it tough to quit them?

I grew up with my paternal grandmother, she'd call me to say, you see, many children have very bad habits that people do not like. I don't want you to be like them, be different, she'd then name all those bad habits and I'll keep nodding. Don't be found wanting with some of these bad habits:

  • Talkativeness/nagging: Some people nag over issues for as long as possible. My husband complained of me nagging. I was shocked. I felt so ashamed, so I talk less and avoid things that don't concern me.

  • Glutinous lifestyle: Especially when it comes to what they consume, people do not know how to say no. Try as much as possible not to look at other people's food/items and try to always say no when given to you.

  • Carelessness/unorganised lifestyle: Honestly, some people are just so confused, careless and unorganised. You'll find them everywhere, but they'll never put anything good together, always tattered and careless in keeping things, dressing, etc.

Try to reason (think) twice whenever you are doing anything, pay attention to details.

  • Gossiping: oh yes, don't be surprised. Some people have problems with keeping secrets, especially that of other people. I used to have a pastor's wife who discussed her members' private problems with other church members. To her, she was just talking, but to so many, that was gossiping. I personally could not tell her any single truth about me because I knew my story would be read on TV.

With this, try not to dig into people's lives and wanting to hear news, whether good or bad, about people like my pastor's wife. Also, try to talk less.

  • Rudeness/snobby: some people have no time for friendliness, they're always serious and rude snobby. I understand that there are people who are just being principled, which you must understand as well.
  • Biting of finger nails: gush! I mean some adults, even on the road and on important occasions, would be biting their fingers. I know a man who is a top banking official always biting his fingers, and I feel so irritated. I think such people should wear gloves like the one I put on my children to avoid sucking on their fingers or something else.

Others are use of foul words, forgetfulness, unforgivingness, sluggishness, etc.

How can we tell if a habit is just a habit or if it's more like an addiction? And what can we do to break them?

Addiction is something you can't do without. Some habits have turned into additions because the person makes it to be so. The person has made the habit a regular lifestyle that he/she can't live without.

My husband had a friend who usually gambles. His bad habits turned into addiction so that no money could be found in his pocket. He rented a shop, used the supposed money he wanted to use to buy goods to sell in the shop to gamble, and the shop rent got expired for two years without him buying anything to sell.

Since he was being apart from his family, it took prayers and enough counselling to be able to take him out of his domain to another place for him to start his life all over. So, advice and counselling can help one out of the addicted habit.

What are some challenges that people might face when trying to quit bad habits, and how can they overcome them?
  • Emptiness/dissatisfaction: some people feel empty as if something is missing in them. Take, for instance, someone who is trying to quit smoking or alcohol. It won't be so easy just like that, it has to be a gradual withdrawal after due advice and counselling. So, the individual would be allowed to gradually reduce the intake of cigarettes till it's totally vanished.

Note: it may not be as easy as it seems.

How can we support and encourage others to quit their bad habits without being judgmental or pushy?
  1. I think cautioning the person with love will help.

  2. Then giving a gentle reminder that he/she is at it would help the person adjust gradually.

  3. Lastly, therapy can also help based on the habit a person is trying to quit.

Conclusion

It's not easy trying to quit a bad habit. The change starts with acknowledging that the habit is bad and desiring it to change. With determination, it will be easier to achieve success.

Bad habit is a terrible thing to deal with, problem is how people are so addicted that they cannot break away from it. No one is guiltless of bad habits but what matters is whether or not they do identify it, accept it as a weakness and working toward correcting them.
