Thank you @dexsyluz for organising the contest. I'm glad to participate in the same.
Does radiation cause death?justify your answer |
---|
Effects of radiation on the human body
lonization produced by hard radiation leads to the formation of free radicals- atoms and molecules "missing" an electron in the cells.
The integrity of cells and DNA molecules is violated.
The results of the effects of radiation are:
massive cell death
development of cancer
development of gene mutations
Effects of various doses of radiation | Dose (Gy) |
---|---|
Dose received per year under normal conditions | 0,0007-0,002 |
Maximum acceptable dose of occupational exposure per year | 0,05 |
The level of doubling the probability of gene mutations | 0,1 |
A single dose associated with justified risk in an emergency | 0,25 |
Dose causing acute radiation sickness | 1,0 |
Without treatment. 50% of the exposed die within one to two months due to bone marrow cell disorders | 3-5 |
Death occurs within one to two weeks mainly due to injuries to the gastrointestinal tract | 10-50 |
Death occurs within hours or days due to damage to the central nervous system | 100 |
Unit of absorbed radiation dose-Gray (Gy)
If you were there 40 years ago, what would you want to change so that the Chernobyl accident would not happen? |

The timeline of Chernobyl disaster
April 25, 1986
A safety experiment was carried out while Reactor No. 4 is shut down for routine maintenance.
26 April, 1986 1:23 am: a sudden drop in power triggers a chain of events causing the reactor to overheat.
Reactor no.4 explodes. A radioactive cloud of smoke shoots 1 km into the air and, pushed by the winds, spreads across northern Europe.
April 26- May 5, 1986
Thousands of tonnes of sand, clay and lead are dropped on to the reactor to quench the fire.
November 1986
"Temporary" steel-concrete cover is build over destroyed reactor to contains its 200 tonnes of molten nuclear fuel.
1986-1990
Hundreds of thousands of clean-up workers attempt to isolate and decontaminate the danger zone.
1997
An international fund is set up to build a new sarcophagus to replace the badly leaking "temporary" cover over the reactor.
The new sarcophagus started in 2010. The project was completed in November,2017.

From the timeline and series of facts it is evident that there was blame game going on to cover up the disaster and failure of then government. Government not only hide the massacre but continued First May parade inspite of dangerous risk of radiations. Gorbachev lied the nation in TV speech that international news was highly immoral campaign instead of admitting the disaster. One of the reasons of failure of glasnost was government's hide and seek play with masses about Chernobyl disaster.
There were lack of safety considerations in the reactor design as well as metrial of construction to prevent such massacre.
Nowadays, how are we exposed to radiation? |

Radiation in our daily lives
There are many ways we are exposed to radiation throughout our lives. Not only does radiation naturally occur in the air we breathe and earth we live upon, common procedures like medical imaging also expose us to different amounts of radiation.
Before I conclude I would like to invite three fellow Steemians to participate in the contest. @crismenia @joymm @eveetim

saludos
Dios te bendiga
