Greetings friends of Steemit and Healthy Steem
You probably heard that high cholesterol poses a serious risk to your health potentially leading to heart disease or stroke. this is part of the reason your primary care provider may check and monitor your cholesterol, but what is cholesterol anyway and why are there both good and bad types of cholesterol. Cholesterol is a type of essential fat that helps make cells hormones and vitamin D. It travels through the blood stream by way of lipoproteins but not all lipoproteins are the same.
LOW density lipoproteins also known as LDL are often referred to as bad cholesterol. High density lipoproteins HDL referred to as good cholesterol.
Cholesterol Levels
Cholesterol | DANGEROUS | AT-RISK | HEART-HEALTHY |
---|---|---|---|
Total | 240 and higher | 200-239 | Under 200 |
LDL | 160 and higher | 100-159 | Under 100 |
HDL | Under 40 (male) Under 50 (female) | 40-59 (male) 50-59 (female) | 60 and higher |
What kind of investigations are used to measure level of cholesterol? |
---|
Lipid Profile or lipid panel is a blood test that analyzes the amount of certain fat molecules called lipids in your blood these fat molecules are basically cholesterol and triglycerides. Now what test parameters are included in lipid profiles I mean these different parameters now the lipid profile tests include total cholesterol, triglycerides,
HDL cholesterol, Idl cholesterol then vldl cholesterol.
You may need it if you have a family history of heart disease or stroke if you are overweight or obese, drink alcohol frequently, smoke cigarettes to lead an inactive lifestyle.
Why HDL is good cholesterol? |
---|
High density lipoproteins HDL or good cholesterol will help move cholesterol to the liver where it's flushed out. So what can we do to make more of the good cholesterol and less of the bad while a healthy lifestyle is important for your overall well-being and can cause a slight Improvement in your cholesterol.
