What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?
Your BMI is measurement of your body weight based on your height and weight. Although your BMI does not actualy measure your percentage of body fat, it is a useful tool to estimate a healthy body weight based on your height.
HOW TO CALCULATE BMI: BMI EQUATION
BM weight (lb)/height (in)² × 703 (U.S. Units)
According to BMI (Body Mass Index) Obesity is classified into three classes.
Category | BMI | obesity Class |
---|---|---|
underweight | < 18.5 kg/m2 | - |
normal weight | 18.5-24.9 kg/m2 | - |
overweight | 25.0-29.9 kg/m2 | I |
obesity | 30.0-39.9 kg/m2 | II |
extreme obesity | 40 kg/m2 | III |
As the BMI is a mathematical no only and don't measure the PBF ( Percentage Body Fat) and cannot give correct indication of adiposity. Therefore only acting as population level indicator of obesity.
In contrary to WHO current research suggests that PBF range of 23-25 % and 30-35% to be considered as cut-off for obese men and women.
Women tend to have more body fat than men at the same BMI.
Order adults tend to have more body fat than younger adults at the same BMI.
Athletes may have have higher BMI due to the more muscle mass.
Which type of obesity could be fatal? |
---|
Individuals who have BMI's that fall into the overweight and obese ranges are at higher risk for:
Type 2 diabetes
Heart Dieseses
Stroke
Joint Pain
High LDL (bad cholesterol)
Gallbladder disease
Osteoarthritis
Hypertension
Obstructive sleep apnea
Low HDL (good cholesterol)
Asthma
Our risk of developing certain types of cancer increases with obesity and over weight.
Women with obesity are st a higher risk of developing cancers of the breast, gallbladder and lining of the uterus.
Men with obesity are at a higher risk for developing cancers of the rectum, colon, and prostate.
So extreme obesity can be fatal.
Are you have any family history of obesity and from which parent it is?(From mother or father) |
