👩‍⚕️What are some common risks associated with home births?

No Pain Epidural: You're going to have to opt for a natural birth if you do a home birth.

Possibly Unreliable Medical Care: You won't have a proper doctor or team of specialists at your service.

Insufficient Monitoring: Your vitals may not be monitored as often as in a hospital, complications may be spotted later than in a hospital.

👩‍⚕️ What strategies can be employed to prepare for emergencies during a home birth?

Cleaning Up After Birth: Put plastic wrap on everything!

Emergency Response: If something goes wrong, you'll need to be shipped off to a hospital ASAP.

Complications: Your life or your baby's life may be at risk if your midwife is unprepared for complications. Choose a certified nurse midwife.

Documentation: You'll need to handle things like filing a birth certificate on your own.

👩‍⚕️In your opinion, how can families best prepare for unexpected emergencies during a home birth?

Research Your Options: Can you have a home birth? Do you want a water birth? Would a birthing center work better for you?

Choose a Midwife: Is your midwife certified and experienced with home births? What are your pain relief options?

Have an Emergency Plan: Make advance plans for potential emergencies such as high blood pressure during labor.

Decide on the Details: In which room will you labor and birth? Who will be present?

Check Insurance Coverage: Call your provider and confirm details before you decide on home birth

Do Necessary Labs: Like urine culture, Strep B screen, and a complete blood count

Obtain Cleaning and Other Necessary Supplies: Like overnight pads, towels, and extra sheets.

Mental Preparation: Have a birth plan, visualize soothing images, play music, if you like, and try to relax.

Prepare Your Home and Family: Share your birth plan with your partner. Tell your children what to expect, if you'd like them present.

Prepare to Document Your Experience:

Find a good birth photographer, and remember, lighting is everything! Make sure the room is well-lit but still cozy.

👩‍⚕️ Do you think there is only one solution of hospital birth to mitigated these risks?

There are certain conditions under which a home delivery can be done provided a registered doctor recommends.
