👩‍⚕️ What are some common risks associated with home births?

While some home birth may be intentional and others unplanned, Lack of Good Medical attention posses a threat.

• Absence of proper medical care in case of emergencies.
• No medical facilities to monitor the health status of the baby in the womb
• Distress of both mother and baby incase of prolonged birth.
• Could lead to death of either mother or child or both often due to inexperience or delayed medical attention.
• Chances of prolonged birth due to complications
• Risk of infection either from using unsterilized instruments.

👩‍⚕️ What strategies can be employed to prepare for emergencies during a home birth?

In case of planned home birth, it's easy preparing for emergencies compared to unexpected sudden labour. In case if emergencies:

• Emphasis on the importance of first aid kit at home.
• Emergency contact of a trained medical personnel should be available.
• The expectant mother should be trained on how to remain calm and manage emergency.
• Regular visit to clinic for antenatal and scan to know the position of the foetus as well as potential risk can help eliminate or manage risk.
• The midwife should be adequately trained and experienced to handle emergencies.

👩‍⚕️In your opinion, how can families best prepare for unexpected emergencies during a home birth?

It's hard to foretell unexpected occurrence more so prepare for it. But since we live in a world of uncertainty, we are advised to imagine worse case scenario and how to deal with it. For example while we do what the future will bring, we make investments that will help in the future.
Before hand, family should discuss and practice on how to act or respond to emergencies. Probably keep emergency contact handy, be well informed of potential emergencies and know when to act fast. In cases of other children or child, provide for someone to care for the child while the mother is in labour.
It's also important to know that the mind can pose as a powerful tool or a dangerous one. So it's best family to think positively and encourage each other.

👩‍⚕️ Do you think there is only one solution of hospital birth to mitigated these risks?
No.
Hospital birth maybe the best option because there is emergency facilities kept in place. Incase of emergency Cesarean section or other surgeries during delivery, hospital offers first hand advantage and can easily tackle this issue.
There is also machines to monitor the well-being of the foetus as well as the mother's heartbeat.

Another solution is skill birth attendants home.
Mom had all her children at a birth attendant (midwife) home. In my country, the cost of putting to birth at a midwife's home is relatively low compared to hospitals. According to mom, the midwife was really skilled and had knowledge on herbs that helps with delivery. Herbs that will induce labour, quicken labour among others. Also, few days to labour she would use her hand to feel the baby's position. If it's breech and beyond her, she would refer to the hospital before labour sets in. She also had contacts of hospital personnel just in case.

Conclusion

While home birth offers comfortable and convince and as well save cost, it should be done with adequate training and emergency contacts in place. Life should be prioritised.
