Definition of Cholesterol?

It can be defined as a Sterol found in the body cells which plays a unique role in the bodily functions. It is produced by the Liver in the human body and also gotten from the food we eat. It helps in fat absorption and digestion, it also helps in producing hormones like testosterone in the body.

What is cholesterol level and what are it's types?

Cholesterol levels can be defined as the amount of Cholesterol in the body. It is usually measured in Milligrams per Deciliter(mg/dl)

  • High Density Lipoprotein

This is a type of Lipoprotein that carries Cholesterol from the blood stream to the Liver. It is referred to as the good Cholesterol because it removes too much Cholesterol from the body, transports Cholesterol to the Liver for removal and helps to maintain a healthy heart by reducing the risk of Heart disease.

  • Low Density Lipoprotein

Low Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol also carries Cholesterol from the Liver to cells in the body. It is referred to as the bad Cholesterol because it can contribute to Plague pile up in the arteries thereby increasing the risk of heart disease.

What kind of investigations are used to measure level of cholesterol?
  • Lipid Profile

The level of Cholesterol in the body is measured through a blood test known as Lipid Profile. It measures the amount of Cholesterol and triglyceride in the body. To conduct this test, small quantity of blood is drawn from the arm through the vein. The result of the test comes out within the space of two days.

  • Direct Cholesterol Test

This test measures Cholesterol well especially when it's high. Blood is drawn from the vein in the arm and analysed using high Performance Liquid Chromatography. The result of the test comes out within the space of two days.

Why HDL is good cholesterol?

It is referred to as good Cholesterol, because it helps to reduce plaque buildup in the arteries which can lead to risk of Heart disease and Stroke. It also helps to carry excess Cholesterol from the body to the Liver where it is processed and eliminated from the body.
