Home birth

Having a baby is a wonderful event and while expecting everyone is preparing themselves. We have 9 months to consider what we want to do and how we want to have that special day. Nowadays there are more young people who tend to wish a birth in their home circumstances, so that you have your comfortable environment. You may have your parents and other children who also want to be a part of the process when the baby comes. Often a birth might take few hours and sometimes 24 hours therefore, other children might feel left alone at home and that parents do not want them to be with them during this process.

What are some common risks associated with home births?

When we think about risks and complication it is important to think about following:

  • even in hospital there are situation when baby is born but does not breath, that is important moment when people around should be ready to perform CPR or cardio-pulmonary resuscitation that is a compression of breastbone to attempt to re-start heart beat. There are rare cases when it could happen and the first minutes are very important and that can save a baby

  • if any women had C-section (Caesarian section) that means when the birth required a cut of abdominal wall and uterus to deliver a baby that only means the next baby might require that again and it is not save to have a home birth

  • Women who suffer from Diabetes and high Blood pressure should not have a birth at home due to worsening of both conditions on the peak of delivery

  • If a woman has any blood disorder causing a problem with blood clotting should not have home birth as that could lead to significant bleed

All these reason should be considered when a couple think of having birth at home.

What strategies can be employed to prepare for emergencies during a home birth?

The best is if you are able to arrange a midwife to be present for the time of home birth.

If that is not doable then the fmaily should be able to perform CPR on both mother and child just in case of a situation happens and it will be necessary to save either of them.

The women should have their regular Ultrasound so that they are aware that the position of baby is correct and the head is in pelvis of a mother.

During pregnancy women should have regular follow up with blood tests, Blood Pressure monitoring as well as Blood Sugar as it is often the case that during pregnancy women may develop Diabetes of pregnant women.

The couple should also be aware that if there is any difficulties in sake of a healthy baby they should immediately get transport to hospital.

In your opinion, how can families best prepare for unexpected emergencies during a home birth?

In my opinion, it is not possible to prepare for emergencies in home conditions, because it is emergency and what people should do to get ambulance as soon as possible.

The only what can support the life of both mother and child:

  • to perform CPR if needed
  • to apply some towels and pressure to slow down bleeding
  • do not loose precious time

Do you think there is only one solution of hospital birth to mitigated these risks?

In my opinion yes, it is only way avoid the risks and to give a save birth there where you have professional skilled staff who is ready for any emergency and who also able to give mother time for rest and look after your baby so long is mother recovering.

It was an interesting contest and a chance just to think about such important step a birth of new life.

I would like to invite @lusciouslucy, @maryemolinet and @jes88 to this contest

Gnubbel alert!!! So adorable...

I didn't give birth to any of my children in a clinic. But a home birth didn't seem to be the right option for me either; I was alone with the kids each time and their care had to be guaranteed. Besides, the dogs might run amok if they smelled a birth (or so I thought...) So my decision was a birth centre. Independent midwives who run a communal, rather cosy and comfortable and not at all clinical birthing centre. No doctor, no apparatus medicine.

Well. A few dozen years ago there were still a lot of these facilities; they were very popular with parents-to-be. In the meantime, more and more facilities have given up because the conditions, especially the insurance premiums, have become prohibitively expensive.

It is a real dilemma where to have our babies, I know some of my friends who had home birth and luckily everything was fine. There are on other side who from beginning on wanted C-section so that they do not have any pain but on other hand they suffer form other pain of operation and there is no guarantee that there is no complication.

Good network of midwives is important for save birth no matter if women would like to have their babies at home or in medical facilities.

Was für zwei super Bilder , damit bekommst du sogar mich ins sentimentale

Hola gracias por invitarme a participar 😊

Given birth at home is too risky. I don’t think anyone should even consider it, given the fact you stated in your post.

You said something that caught my attention that once a lady delivers with CS, subsequent children will have to come through that way!! Why is it that way? Will the stitches tear up again?

Chances of the stitches tearing up is there. There could be other arising complications. It's more of 50:50 chances some women still deliver the other way and mother and child comes out fine. But life is too precious for such gamble unless the doctor sees it safe.

Ok.. I asked because most times in Nigeria here, you will see some women with 5 or 6 kids..

So, I was wondering, assuming she takes in 6x, and delivers through cs, it means, she will be torn 6x….

Thank you for clearing the air for me… I appreciate!

Unfortunately, circumstances hinder many pregnant woman in the south of the world to follow a proper check-up cause lack of funds. My mother-in-law had 8 children and during pregnancy and giving birth she hadn't seen any doctor, any midwife, no blood test, no ultrasound, nothing, nothing. Thanks God all her children were born alive and no lack of breathing...

Ps.: the baby in the image is too cute!

Thank you, friend!
