Date Fruits

Date fruits (or dates) are not just natural sweeteners. They are small, chewy fruits which are packed with nutrients that enhance the brain's cognitive functions.

These seasonal fruits are often grown in Nigerian northern states, like Jigawa, Sokoto, Bauchi, etc.

How does date fruit boost the brain health?
Every time you pop a piece of date into your mouth, you get tons of health benefits – from energy boost to prevention against diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

This one-seeded fruit is rich in magnesium, potassium, and other minerals that improve cognitive performance.

It is also a good source of antioxidants, such as flavonoids, which is known for protecting the brain cells from oxidative stress because it combats free radicals.

Studies suggest that flavonoids have therapeutic potential and can help prevent neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive decline in the aging population.

Also, the vitamin B6 contained in date fruit is important for the brain's health and metabolism.

Why it is my favourite for brain health?
It became my favourite dry fruit for the brain when I discovered that it improves my memory, learning abilities and reduces anxiety. This meant that if I mixed it with milk, my brain got more alert and my lecture lessons and notes became easier to understand.

Date fruits can be served or eaten in different ways.
You can eat the fruit on its own as a snack or use them as natural sweeteners in other foods, such as yoghurt, smoothie or oatmeal..

Additional tips

  • Dried dates contain a higher level of calories unlike fresh dates, as such, there is a need to eat them in moderation
  • Even though dates are highly nutritious and rich in antioxidants, it is often advised that they should be taken moderately, especially since they contain carbohydrates and can give rise to tooth cavities.

When eaten proportionately, they are considered to be a healthier alternative to refined sugar.
