Prolonged cough

Cough is a natural protective mechanism that we do when there is any foreign body irritates our airway, because our lungs would like to clear obstruction and makes us to cough.

Let’s have a look what kind of obstruction airway we can find and the situations when we have cough:

  • choking while eating or drinking. Cough appears for very short period and once obstruction is resolves cough is also settles

  • secretions due to smoking. Smoking causing production of secretion in our upper airway that is why we start coughing and bringing mucus out of our lungs

  • infection. Any infection will cause secretion that will fill in the air pockets and that irritates our airway and causing coughing

All these situations will cause cough but usually after after a week or two that will settle because of our immune system but also we do our best with drinking plenty, vitamin C and all natural stuff.

On other hand we all have to remember that if we are coughing for long time like more 3-4 weeks, because during this time any infection will settle and our immune system will sort out any easy fixing problem. What is the most serious problem that we are worried about when having prolonged cough? It is a possibility of cancer.

Lung cancer is one of the biggest cancer death and on the 5th place in UK statistic. Often people do not see doctor because it does not cause pain, there is no nausea or vomiting, many can live and work normally but often family members are first who alert those people. If the help is searched on early stage it could be right time for early diagnosis and treatment and we know that many survive surgery and oncological treatment.

Therefore, all of us have to be aware not to leave prolong cough on a long shelf and search for help.

I had very bad cough (prolong cough) at that time, and despite receiving a lot of medication, it was not gone away. But, when I met chest specialist, he found that wheeze is the source for my cough. Then he prescribed me an antibiotic inhaler. My cough cleared up after about three weeks of using them.

We often hope that cough will pass, especially if it does not make us very unwell. Often doctors do not rush with antibiotics and prefer to advise simple remedies. But often only antibiotics can clear up completely our chest. I am glad that your cough responded to the treatment.

I heard that UK doctors reluctant to give antibiotics, but in Sri Lanka for normal fever also prescribed antibiotics. I disagree with our doctors at this moment because when our bodies become used to antibiotics, they request drugs for all disorders. Thank you very much for response.

Thank you for inviting me to this contest. Good luck.

It is a pleasure, just if you have some time :)

You have carefully highlighted the causes of cough and the possible result if cough is left untreated. That's great.

Good luck to you!

I believe we all had cough during our lifetime but the longer it lasts the more careful we should be with it.

That's right.

Greetings friend @wuddi

Very important information about cough, but above all very good recommendations to take into account when suffering from this disease.
