Greetings. I’m excited to be a part of this contest on the reasons we eat food. I’d like to thank @ for organising such a beautiful contest to make us assess the reasons we love doing best—eating. Food is the fundamental part of every living thing.
Without food, nothing can live, talk more of surviving. We’ve been used to this act from childbirth to the point that we are today. And we’ll continue till the end of time. But the reasons we do this needs to be reflected on, which is the reason for this contest. Let’s dive into this together. Shall we?
Food is the substance that we eat to give us strength and make us look healthy. It is anything edible we take in to sustain and energise the body. When we talk about food, we do not just obtain or get what we eat from just plants.
Although plants make up a higher percentage of what we eat, we still get our food from other sources like animals and edible fungi(example, mushroom). Fruits are also major parts of the things we need to consume to keep us healthy and energetic.
In fact, they are even more nutritious than the solid foods we consume.
Animals are processed in an edible manner suitable for the stomach. And as such they form sources of food and nutrients to body.
There are basically six classes of food which are:
i. Protein
ii. Carbohydrate
iii. Fat and oil
iv. Mineral salt
v. Fat and oil
vi. Water
We have varieties of sumptuous meals here in my country. Foods give us strength, but good and nutritious foods give nutrients to the body, and even to the bones.
Melon and okro soup with garri
Okro contains vitamins and fiber. It has antioxidants, as well as a good support the heart. It’s also said to heal ulcers and do so many other healthy things to the body. Melon on the other hand is low in calories, fat, and sodium. They have vitamins and rich in fiber.
Rice and beans
Another one we like so much from my place here is vegetable soup, known locally as “Edikang ikong.” The health benefits of this food are numerous. Only the vegetable is enough to give sufficient nutrients to the body.
This food can be had with garri, foofoo, semovita, semolina or any kind of pasta. Vegetables help in providing blood to the body. It also lowers blood pressure and reduces the risk of cancer and high blood pressure. Vegetables also have positive effects upon blood pressure.
Corn and pear
Pears are rich in calories and can benefits a person’s digestion and the overall wellbeing of a person. When having this combo, we prefer the African pear to have a good match and taste with the corn. Pear can support weight loss, and reduce a person’s risk of cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.
Food is as important as life to the body. They say water is life, but water without food isn’t a complete or normal life.
Below are some of the importance of food to living creatures:
- Promotion of health and prevention of disease: Eating well promotes a person's appearance, and keeps one from getting sick unnecessarily.
- Provision of amino acids: They provide protein to the body which in turn provides amino acids to the protect the human system.
- Food can reduce stress, strain, and tension: If someone finds himself in a tensed state, eating a little bit of a good amount of food can reduce that tension.
Most people live to eat, but we should live to eat. Those that eat to live eat whatever comes into their sight. They eat because they are hungry, and maybe that’s what they can afford at the moment. These people also eat to live in that they eat all kinds of junks which they term as “snacks.”
But the right and proper thing is to actually eat to live. When someone eats to live, they become mindful of their diet. They do not just consume anything that comes into sight; rather, they are careful in selecting what they feed on, and eat what can only bring nutrients to the body.
It is sometimes difficult to eat well or know what’s right to do because of the resources involved. This can be problematic especially when one does not have enough, and is unable to afford most of these things.
But we can still get good things at affordable prices. The most important thing is to consume those things that can sustain the immune system and keep us healthy.

Wow I never knew that pear contains all this. Nawaoo we learn everyday. Pear and corn always go together.
