Realities that pigeonhole us

By natural instinct, all human beings think we are free. Our preferences, tastes and even the decisions we make are part of all those ideas of free will that allow us to be 100% independent people. However, reality has been in charge of showing us that there are many realities that are pigeonholing us since, they decide for us without us realizing it and, this happens inevitably.

All human beings are born in a certain time and place. At the moment of being part of the society in which we are making life in the world, we have the task of adopting all the regulations that dominate in it. A considered segment of these standards, we usually make them our own without giving them the benefit of the doubt and we do not process them consciously. During the adaptation process, what we do is incorporate them, assimilate them and assume them into our daily lives in a natural way.

Most of the time, these norms are part of a rationality of collective origin and their purpose is to seek the general welfare. However, in some cases this is not the case. Now, although they are realities that are pigeonholing us, we continue without stopping to think about what benefits they are bringing us.

Value system

These systems are made up of a set of moral principles and ideologies that tell us what is right or wrong, in a specific society. These include all the schemes in charge of determining the guidelines that explain what the ideal human being is like. Let us keep in mind that each of these values are imparted and instilled from our birth.

The people in charge of teaching us these values, in the first instance is the family and later, they are complemented in the social institutions where we begin to make life to develop our formation. On some occasions we come to think that the values that imprint us in society are unique and at the same time, the best, however, this is not the case in all cases.

It is essential to keep in mind that certain values are designed to promote our evolution. We also have others that indicate blind obedience and, precisely these in many cases pigeonhole us in a reality that beyond bringing us positive things in our lives, what they do is corner us. Therefore, before adopting them, we must analyze them.

Fashions

Since the middle of the twentieth century, fashion has been gaining an unusual high and great power. Indisputably this has been known for a long time, however, starting from the time when the industrial revolution broke out, this ended up becoming a very relevant element in the lives of all of us.

Fashion is a way to support belonging and identification in a given group. She is in charge of giving us the sense of belonging. They literally become a reality that pigeonholes us when we adopt it uncritically, even though they are against our preferences and tastes. The same happens when they are part of an excessive desire for simple acceptance.

Customs

As with values, we have customs that we follow from our birth. They help us to incorporate ourselves into society and, in turn, indicate the norms that we must accept. However, these can hinder or, failing that, limit our development.

If we refer to the customs that are formed in the habits, these are positive since, they guide us and help us preserve what is good. Adverse situation is a custom when we are told that a person has to marry before turning 15 because, that is not something that brings a real benefit.

The important thing in these aspects is that, at all times we must have the possibility to study and evaluate each of the customs that we are following in order to know whether to change them or failing that, maintain them and always do it so that our criteria are our own.

Roles

The role is represented by a specific and very concrete role that a given person has the responsibility to execute in a group. In another term, it is the function that is assigned to someone. There are various roles with different orders and categories that are governed by certain patterns. With them, the human being is expected to act according to the role assigned to him.

When analyzing everything that roles entail, we can realize that they are a reality that immediately pigeonhole us for it, we must be aware of whether we are adopting them passively or actively because when it happens passively, they can not bring us positive things. This means that, if we accept them because it is a certain behavior and we do not evaluate them logically, they may limit our personal growth and it is not correct.

Stereotypes

A stereotype is the mental scheme that is usually applied to a person or groups. They are understood by a set of patterns or failing that, of ideas that can bring us closer to the meaning that a person or group has. The main characteristic of stereotypes is prejudice, that is, they are ideas that apply in a given reality under false reasoning or veracity.

When we allow ourselves to be dominated by a stereotype, it immediately makes us act and think automatically and more than 80% of the time, they are wrong ideas.

Finally, keep in mind that all the realities that I share in this publication, pigeonhole us since they filter into our consciousness in order to determine the way we are seeing the world. Rethinking all the things that have been instilled in us will always be an excellent strategy because this can help us evaluate if they are actually bringing us positive things or failing that, they are limiting us.
