The smartphone has changed our lives completely, and most of us couldn’t imagine life without them, but are we missing something here? I’ve compiled a list of 8 reasons why smartphones may be more harmful to us and our environment than we care to admit. Some of the points will be familiar to you, but some might surprise you too!

Check out my list below and tell me your thoughts in the comments!

1. Eye Problems

Avoiding temporary blindness in one eye is possible, but another, much more common ailment you're at risk of developing is eye strain. As we spend more and more time looking at a computer and a cell phone, our eyes will inevitably start to tire and become strained.

In addition to interfering with your sleep, phone use before bedtime can also lead to temporary blindness. When you lie on your side and are looking at your phone in the dark, it's possible to go temporarily blind. It would probably be a good idea to put your phone down before bed.

2. Radiation Issues

In recent years, mobile phone radiation has become a popular topic, and with good reason. These mobile devices and their transmitters generate radio waves. Though not considered to be harmful to humans, long-term exposure to low-frequency radio waves can lead to the development of tumors in the body.

3. Anxiety

Despite keeping you connected to your entire circle of friends, your phone may be causing you social anxiety. A lot of this anxiety may be the result of feeling obligated to respond immediately to every text, email, or notification you get. But curiously enough, using your phone for professional purposes did not result in increased stress.

4. Mindfulness Issues

Digital multitasking may seem effective in the short term, but it could make us less focused in the long run. Studies from Microsoft show that our attention span is only eight seconds on average, but A goldfish, on average, pays attention for nine seconds. These shortened attention spans are new and are more profound in heavy multi-screeners. In 2000, before the birth of smartphones, humans could focus on something for 12 seconds.

Digital multitasking not only reduces your attention span but according to a study in PLoS One, it changes the physical structure of your brain. The gray matter density in the anterior cingulate cortex is smaller in people who engage in a higher amount of media multitasking, and this means less cognitive control and less emotional regulation.

5. Addiction

You can easily become addicted to your cell phone, which causes psychological effects like high anxiety, insomnia, and depression. It also causes an increase in the production of cortisol, which is cardio-toxic.

Among the youth population, almost half of those who look at their phone for more than five hours a day considered suicide or even made plans to kill themselves. There is no better way to highlight the need to limit your phone usage. Perhaps the worst thing about all the ways your phone harms your health is that it's so hard to give it up, but we have to limit our phone usage.

6. Road Accidents

There are many road signs reminding drivers not to use their phones while driving or crossing the street, but these are often ignored. Many people use their phones while driving, and this inattention often leads to fatal car accidents.

7. Hearing Damage

Plugging headphones into your ears and blasting music from your phone can mask the sounds of traffic on your commute home, but that can also put you at risk of hearing loss. Even if you really want to crank up the volume, try to resist.

8. Causing Environmental Damage

All plants in proximity to a mobile tower antenna typically suffer from dry, brown tips, which also tends to happen with fruit-bearing plants.

And Mobile towers can affect birds as well. Recently, the Ministry of Environment and Forests conducted a study that determined that electromagnetic radiations (EMR) from mobile towers impact the flying patterns of birds. EMR waves can disturb the sense of direction of migratory birds.

Conclusion

Those who have great power have a great responsibility, and the advances in mobile technology have indeed granted us the opportunity to attain greater power. However, be careful when using it so that we can save the day. So, next time you take your phone out, be mindful of how much you’re using your phone and what you’re doing on it. Because, for better or worse, we can all do a little bit to make our world a better place.

Let’s start now. Together.
