You might be wondering why I posted this photo for my food photography contest entry. Well to be honest this is just a very simple food. But growing up, this food has been a big part of my childhood. And I will never get tired of eating this food.

Lugaw and lumpia or porridge and spring rolls are the only food my mom could afford everytime I go with her to buy our weekly food in the public market. While other people enjoy in fast food chains my mom would bring me in that very small stall that serves hot porridge and pair it with lumpia.

Filipino glutinous rice gruel or porridge. Lugaw includes various dishes, both savory and sweet. In Visayan regions, savory lugaw are collectively referred to as pospas. Lugaw is widely regarded as comfort food in the Philippines. Mothers usually serves it to their sick children. I do remember getting sick and my mom would serve her bland lugaw. I would always wish to get well because of her tasteless lugaw.

My lugaw would not be complete without their 3 pesos lumpia or spring rolls. Lumpiang Togue is a variation of the spring roll. Instead of meat, Mung bean sprouts or locally known as togue are used as the major ingredient. This dish is a popular appetizer and snack in the Philippines and it is best eaten when dipped in spicy vinegar with onions and whole peppercorn. If I have 11 pesos I can already have a satisfying meal at Loloy's Lugaw. Five pesos for the lugaw and 2 pcs lumpia.

But this lugaw and lumpia here is not the same as what I had way back then. This is a bit more expensive. Lugaw is for 50 and the lumpia is for 3 pcs. for 15 pesos. Having less back then this food had given me satisfaction. During those days when my mom can not afford, and in college before I go home I would pass by and buy lugaw, this was the only thing I can afford too that time.

Now that I have a good job and can afford I still go back to that small stall my mom buys lugaw at. I even let my kids try it. I will never get tired of having this food. Simple but satisfying, the kind of food I will never outgrow.

This food is something I will share with my family, I might also try to cook this the same as the lugaw I had as a kid. I hope it wouldn't be as bland as my moms lugaw.
