Memorable?

With the sketchbook, we sat on the bench on the square.

And? What do you see?

A lady in red... The words were spoken before I had a deeper thought.

Contours, contours, how many times do I have to say it, the teacher shouted as he frantically drew in the air with his pencil. Contours, no details, you can colour in in your spare time. Look, look and see! Take in the contours as your hand draws them on paper.

Blood, I thought, she carries the colours of life, love and death. How isolated she stands at the monument of the servants who fought and died for...

I look around me. It is Memorial Day and life goes on. People chat about everything except those who died for their freedom. A man has fallen asleep on a bench. Mothers with children, old and young, no longer dwell on a war that seems long ago. Even the man in the uniform doesn't care much about Memorial Day.

She stands alone on the square. Confused, waiting, uncertain because she is the only one for whom this day does count. Resignedly she watches how children climb over the monument. She would like to scream but keeps her mouth shut and turns around. Five minutes of silence for the heroes, men like her father. With a blush of shame, she counts to 300 sees the two men with a sketchbook, turns abruptly and walks away.

And? Do you have the contours, the master asks.

I nod. With quick lines, I sketch the outlines and next the most important lines. I looked and saw what others didn't want to see. Ignorance, a monument that lost its meaning, and a lady in red in the centre between life and death.

She remembers what everyone has forgotten. Perhaps if she waited for some more time, maybe others would have remembered and joined her to commemorate the fallen heroes.

It could be that some other people remember but don't want to participate in the celebrations because they don't see anyone else doing so. The main speaker also remembers and also doesn't do anything. Maybe others also wanted to but wanted to see others participating first. What do you think?

A very interesting and nice piece by the way. 🤍

Good luck and have a nice day! ☺️

That square is filled with people. Usually, memorable day everyone gathers and there is a ceremony held by the state/mayor. It doesn't look that way.
No way others will join or even care. Life goes on.

There is so much that can be felt in this text, the achievements of the past for which we can feel grateful, free... the monument that loses its meaning, both something that becomes generic... The lady who remembers her father, here I stop. Many things may be lost in the shuffle, but some, just a few, remain intact.

I feel that she may be feeling that her father fought for something that no one thinks about, but that they enjoy... she feels discomfort and pain, but it was your father's choice, so she will go home, thinking that her father fought. for what he wanted. But of course, she will think about it after she gets home, on the way, she will be crying...

I liked reading you.

My guess is her father was forced to fight like most soldiers fight for a war they never started or understand.

Today your best friend, tomorrow the enemy you should give a bulket through his head. Why isn't mr President doing this job himself?

A lot of nonsense about being a hero, fighting for the country, freedom...

The once heroes are suddenly traotors or even called enemies of the state because the "wirld" changed and history is a bad thing.

For sure she's hurt and with her many are and they all stayed home where it's safe while wondering why all those men died, had to fight while they wait till the monument is broken down because it is called 'inappropriate' by some.

Thank you for reading and commenting.

Could it be that the woman in red is a history lover, or has a lineage from one of the warriors?

The answer is written. Who she is and why she is there but also that what she expected is not found.

Each country has its memorial day where the people celebrate the end of a war (or more wars since most countries fought war after war). Soldiers, underground figures, spies, therorists changed into heroes/martyrs are honoured. There she is to find out no one cares.

What would you do? Go home or pay the honour, wipe out history because everyone does?

🤔

Yes, November 10 in our country, that day all civil servants lined up neatly in a large field in each region.

Just a symbol? No even lower than that, there is no appreciation at all, just to comply with the rules or sign the attendance list.

Why? No one cares anymore about the blood of our predecessors that has been spilled, what matters now is how to be greedy!

That is sad, as sad as it is with us and Europe.

They say one united Europe can only be built if all nations their history is wiped out and the races are mixed. Raping is permitted. We live in a sick world.

Without history, no identity

I am not sure if greed is noticed here but poverty is and the worst is if people keep up appearances. No one knows, no aid.
