It was a bright Tuesday and I was very convinced that I would bring all the whole drama of meeting Mrs Gift to an end. I was ready to defile all odds and meet her that day.
While in my room, I sighted miss Gift from afar coming back to the house, perhaps from the hospital. I quickly grabbed a glass of water and headed out of the room.
Good day Mrs Gift.... I greeted with all confidence as I was ready for anything. You again? Good day! What do you want? Mrs Gift asked with a look that explained she was not interested in anything.
I want to talk to you, I responded. About what..? She quickly added. Many things, I said.
I was surprised when she said I should come to her flat that evening. I was so happy. That evening, I was so eager to go although there were few negative thoughts going on in my mind but the positive ones overshadowed it.
As I entered Mrs Gift's sitting room, she offered me a sit and headed to the freezer to bring something to drink but I stopped her, telling her that I was fine.
Without hesitation, I began;
I really like your daughter ma. She's a nice little girl. I really would be so comfortable if you too are happy.
She looked at me and asked what I meant by that..
I'm a friend and not an enemy Mrs Gift. I have watched you for a while now and I'm pretty sure that there's something that keeps you off balance whenever you remember it and it is really affecting your psychological well being. I know you sometimes wish to come off it but it has eaten really deep.
I became close to your daughter because I wanted to get close to you too, perhaps friendship can ease the burden a bit... I paused to hear what she had to say at that moment.
Are you a psychologist? Mrs Gift asked me. Of course not, I only study people to know what they are going through.. perhaps it's a gift.
She was just speechless. Her eyes turned watery at the moment but she held herself together. Her reactions proved that indeed nobody had really showed concern about whatever she was passing through.
Don't worry, you can share whatever it is with me. I'm ready to listen, I said to her...
