Nigeria as a nation has many national festivals. Among these are the Independent Day celebration, children's Day Festival, Workers Day, democracy day, etc. I will be speaking on the democracy day festival
What is the national festival of your country? How did it start
Democracy Day is a national festival that marks the day the military handed over power to an elected civilian government in 1999. This handing over marked the start of the longest civilian rule since Nigeria's independence from colonial rule in 1960.
Democracy Day is usually observed every 29th of May until the new date was decided on June 6, 2018, by former President Muhammadu Buhari who declared June 12 as the new date for the celebration of Nigeria’s democracy. Democracy Day is a tradition that has been held annually, beginning in the year 2000.
How is this festival celebrated? Are there any special rules for celebrating it?
Democracy Day is a national public holiday. The activities observed on this day include a national address by the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and large public celebrations hosted in Eagle Square in the capital city of Abuja, A guard of honour is usually presented by the armed forces of the Federal Republic. Nigerians and friends of Nigeria are charged to appreciate the progress that has been made since the leadership of the nation was handed over to civilians in 1999. We are always charged to celebrate the milestones covered and look forward to a better future for the country’s democracy. Special television programs are also presented.
Are there any special outfits or foods for celebrating your national festival?
Nigerians on this day appear on the colour green and white. Some individuals as a mark of celebration coloured their bodies in colour green and white. The military appears in their ceremonial uniforms to observe a guard of honour and various cultural groups appear in their cultural attires and present their cultural dance.
People eat special dishes on this day to celebrate.
Tell us about your favourite memory from celebrating your national festival.
My favourite memory was the year 2018 celebration which brings to memory the annulment of the 12th June 1993 general election by Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida which was in favour of MKO Abiola. The saddest thing is that MKO Abiola is not alive to witness this day but his family members are. Throughout this year's celebration, the national and private radio and TV stations presented commentaries on the 1993 June 12 general election, its annulment by the then military head of state and the overview of the civilian rule since 1999. It was my favourite because aside the celebration, the 2018 democracy day celebration was educative.
