Introduction
Hi everyone, and thanks to @steem4bangladesh for this wonderful contest, without wasting time, let’s delve right in.
What was the terrible day of your life? What happened to you that day?
In the year 2001, when I was almost a teenager, a devastating series of bomb blast shook Lagos, creating chaos and panic, it was on a Sunday and that day was labelled “Black Sunday”.
Amidst this terrifying event, I and my parents found ourselves caught in the midst of danger. However, through a combination of quick thinking, courage, and a stroke of luck, we managed to escape the blast and ensure the safety of our family.
As the blast occurred, chaos erupted in the vicinity, with people running in every direction, seeking safety. In those tense moments, I,my parents and siblings somehow remained composed, swiftly assessing the situation and identifying the safest course of action.
Guided by my parents's protective instincts and my little bravery, we navigated the chaotic scene, avoiding potential danger zones and moving towards a more secure area. Amid the confusion, we managed to stay together, finding solace in the fact that we were united and determined to overcome this terrifying ordeal.
Utilizing our instincts, we made quick decisions, seeking refuge in nearby buildings or structures that appeared relatively safer. As we moved through the city, my parents provided a source of strength and reassurance, keeping I and my siblings calm and focused amidst the fear and uncertainty.
Lot and lots of people and families lot their lives and sadly not exactly because the bomb hit them but out of fear most people made wrong decisions in looking for an escape route out of the area, some died in a stampede, some left their cars on the high way and ran into wrong places out of fear and met their death, some ran into dirty canals filled with dirty water, trying to swim through, and even after these whole mishap, I saw a footage of some mothers and their babies that drowned in the canal as well as so many kids and adults which all lost their lives. Honestly it was very horrible.
Through a combination of luck and the resilience of my family, we successfully evaded the immediate danger caused by the bomb blast. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, we found a secure location where we could regroup and ensure everyone's safety.
This harrowing experience undoubtedly left a lasting impact on I and your parents, though my mum was pregnant of one of my sibling as at then, and serving as a reminder on how fragile life is why we must value and cherish every moment.
The strength, unity, and resourcefulness displayed during that fateful day continue to shape my character and resilience even years later.
Remembering this event always evoke a range of emotions, but it also serves as a testament to my ability to overcome adversity and cherish the gift of life.
Have similar terrible events happened repeatedly in your life? How do you keep yourself away from it if it happens? And do you still shudder when you remember that terrible day?
No such an event hasn’t repeated itself and I’m hoping and praying it never does, because it one bad experience I would never forget in my life time.
And frankly each time I remember this mishap, though I don’t shudder but I feel some pain due to those who lost their lives due to making wrong decisions out of fear.
What lessons have you learned from that terrible event in your life and what do you want to tell others about it?
One very crucial lesson I learnt from that day is that wherever or whenever there is danger, if not careful, the presence of fear will only cause one to make deadly mistakes, and this lesson I also never forget.
Because if for a moment those who lost their lives had thought for a second, they would have know that it wasn’t an escape route but a death trap, and this saddens me each time I remember.
And what I wish to say to other is, when danger comes lurking, just take a deep breathe and try to do a quick thinking for a bit before making any decision. And this is likened to a driver who experienced a brake failure and on a highway, when such driver panic they could just immediately turn off their vehicle thinking it would make it stop immediately not knowing this is even worse because they won’t even be able to control their wheels having done that.
This is not a driver class though, but was just an illustration 😊, in a nutshell just take a deep breathe and think for a bit before making any decision during danger, this could really save lives.
In Conclusion
No one actually hope or pray for any bad thing to happen, but it is better to be mentally prepared and try to stay calm when such happens in order to make the right decision in those times.
I cordially invite @ngoenyi, @estem, @ukpono & @manhoor22 to participate in this contest 😊✌🏽
The story is very touching! I love the courage, unity and the actions you and your family took. I agree with you that fear must have killed majority as it always does. That is why the saying goes- do not allow fear to kill you before your time. I am glad you made it to safety. We hope for the time when all natural disasters will be gone as promised by the Almighty.
Thank you for the invite.
