Greetings Everyone, This is SHOHANA From #Bangladesh

Pohela Boishakh is one of the most popular national festival that we people celebrate with full freedom. Pohela means first and Boishakh refers to the name of first month of Bangla year, it's like January in English first month of the year. So Pohela Boishakh means the beginning of a new Bangla year.

This is not only belongs to us but also our neighbor country India celebrate this in their traditional style. There are many states in India celebrate this day, specially in West Bengal people celebrate Pohela Boishakh and this belongs to all the people who speaks Bengali or Bangla as their mother tongue.

What is the national festival of your country? How did it start

It's Pohela Boishakh as you can see that I've mentioned it in the title of this post. Since the childhood days I'm seeing this celebrated by our people. I also celebrated when I was a school going girl. There are some traditional get up, foods and functions we have on this occasion. Our ancestors have been celebrating this festival since many centuries.

Well there is a history behind starting Pohela Boishakh and we should know the history of a festival that belongs to us.

"The Pohela Boishakh has its origins in the Mughal Empire, representing the proclamation of tax collection reforms under Akbar. Its celebration is rooted in the traditions of the Mahifarash community of Old Dhaka." Source

How is this festival celebrated? Are there any special rules for celebrating it?

Well I personally believe that festivals shouldn't have any kind of rules because it is open for all and it's aim should be spreading happiness. There are some particular theme that our people follow as tradition. But these are not rules.

For example, wearing white (or yellow) and red combined saree , traditional clothes and jewellery wearing, eating and serving traditional food menus and organize cultural functions to celebrate it, but these are not rules. If anyone doesn't want to be part of these function then it's absolutely fine. No one has right to force anyone to be part of this.

Are there any special outfits or foods for celebrating your national festival?

Yes, Pohela Boishakh festival has specific theme, dress code to follow and special food items. Women and girls wear saree with specific colors like red, yellow, white and green. Men wear punjabi, trouser, kurta, mostly white or off white in color. Sweet dish is a part of the tradition of we Bengali nation so it must be added.

We have white rice and hilsa fish or better known as Ilish. Ilish is also our national fish and part of our traditional foods. We try different kind of mashed vegetables in this occasion as it is also part of our tradition. We better call the mashed vegetables Bharta and it can be mashed boiled fishes too.

Tell us about your favorite memory from celebrating your national festival.

In my childhood days I enjoyed a lot on Pohela Boishakh occasion. We attended Mangal Shobhajatra and village fair on this occasion. My family celebrate this day by preparing traditional foods and shopping from the fair on this occasion. I bought cute and colorful toys from the fair and enjoyed having ride on different kinds of rides available in the village fair where there we lived.

It was my school days when we friends celebrated this first day of Bengali new year by following the traditional vibes. I wore saree and it was my mom's saree as she had a good collection of this traditional outfit. My mom cooked Hilsa fish on this occasion and made our day special one. Those days will remain unforgettable forever.

Hi @shohana1! Thank you for sharing this lively and cheerful report of Pohela Boishakh, the Bengali New Year celebration! Your personal reflections on festival customs - such as wearing colorful sarees and enjoying traditional foods such as ilish fish and various bharta - truly highlight the cultural richness of this event. Your childhood memories of participating in Mangal Shubhagatra and visiting village fairs paint a colorful picture of community joy and celebration. Thank you again for sharing your experiences and the spirit of Pohela Boishakh. Good luck in the contest!

You're welcome and Thanks for taking time to read my post on our national festival Pohela Boisakh. Good luck to you too!

Hello friend, @shohana1
Pahela Boishakh is the festival of our life without doubt I also participate in organizing this festival since childhood. There is a food list for Pahela Baisakh in which hilsa fish is one of them, can we really eat this hilsa now? Is that expensive? The Boishakhi fair was a different kind of joy in my childhood, but now I don't get that joy anymore. The Boishakhi fair is going on in Dinajpur now, there is no festive atmosphere. Good luck to you.

Nice to know that you also take part in this national festival as our native. Thanks for wishing me luck, I wish likewise!

Dear @shohana1
