Waiter - Ivan Shmielov

The main character of Shmielov's novel lives in two worlds: at home, in a circle that is necessarily narrow and limited, and in the world of mirrored rooms of a great restaurant, the blinding glare of chandeliers and heavy porter, obscuring "hidden passages". It is the world of rich people who have everything for money: the splendor of their surroundings, women, exquisite food, the world of people who expose themselves spiritually in a restaurant with vodka, showing their littleness.

The novel "Waiter" is written in the form of a direct statement of the hero. This type of narration gives the work the character of authenticity, enlivens, and colors it.

Although the author of the book is internationally recognized and some of his novels were translated into multiple languages, the "Waiter" remains undiscovered. As far as I know, the book does not have an English translation. It can be read in original, which means in Russian, but also in Polish. As I assume, the book is more available in my country because of the historical ally between Poland and the Soviet Union. If that would be true, I have strong reasons to believe it may be readen in other Eastern European languages as well. Who knows, maybe someday someone will introduce it to the rest of the world by translating it into more popular languages. As the book is worth every recommendation, such a translation would be a big favor for all literature lovers.
