Today's topic is Plagiarism
Plagiarism:
Plagiarism is presenting someone else's work or ideas as your own, with or without their consent, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement. All published and unpublished material, whether in manuscript, printed or electronic form, is covered under this definition.
Example:
Here are some examples of Plagiarism:
Turning in someone else's work as your own.
Copying large sources of text from a source without citing that source.
Taking passages from multiple sources, piecing them together and turning the work as your own.
Types of Plagiarism:
There are many common types of Plagiarism but I am going to explain six types.
- Direct Plagiarism
- Mosaic Plagiarism
- Accidental Plagiarism
- Self Plagiarism
- Misattribution
Direct Plagiarism:
Direct plagiarism is the word-for-word transcription of a section of someone else's work, without attribution and without quotation marks. The deliberate plagiarism of someone else's work is unethical, academically dishonest, and grounds for disciplinary actions, including expulsion.
Copy text from another documents word to word.
Mosaic Plagiarism:
Mosaic Plagiarism occurs when a student borrows phrases from a source without using quotation marks, or finds synonyms for the author's language while keeping to the same general structure and meaning of the original.
Accidental Plagiarism:
Accidental plagiarism occurs when a person neglects to cite their sources, or misquotes their sources, or unintentionally paraphrases a source by using similar words, groups of words, and/or sentence structure without attribution. ... Lack of intent does not absolve the student of responsibility for plagiarism.
Self Plagiarism:
In which the writer republishes a work in its entirety or reuses portions of a previously written text while authoring a new work.
Misattribution:
An incorrect attribution (as for a piece of artwork) For decades this portrait had suffered one misattribution after another.
Form of Plagiarism:
• Copying from a source without acknowledging it.
• Using someone else's ideas without referring to the author.
• Improper Paraphrase.
Elements that contribute to Plagiarism:
All uncited
Improper or fake reference
Unoriginal ideas
Copy pasting
Calculations
Research
Surveys
Raw data
Points to remember while Paraphrasing:
Read and understand the article first.
Make a structured summary of the article.
Rephrase each sentence while Paraphrasing.
The original essence shouldn't be changed.
Proof read to ensure correctness of flow.
Re-check the relevancy of the citation.
How to avoid the Plagiarism:
Start your assignment well in advance
Cite the source properly
Paraphrase
Do your own research
Avoiding use quotes
Providing a bibliography
Use Plagiarism checking site
Use the newer version of the reference
