I had first heard of plagiarism on social media. It happened that someone had copied another person's post without making reference to the original writer and this act led to a call out, banters and trolls here-and-there. It seemed ridiculous to me.

It made no sense whatsoever. All the drama because of not giving credit? Where does that even happen?
To show what exactly?..
Ownership? At what gain?

Do we not all copy stuffs from people?, Be it a stanza from a poem, an excerpt from a book, a line from an article, a popular saying, etc?

It didn't seem like something that would credit one's bank account or make for an award even.
I thought of the fight as unnecessary. Very irrelevant. I laughed loud and hard.

It wasn't until my work was plagiarized that I realized how hurtful the act could be.
Someone else taking credit for my hardwork...I was angry.

So,I made a research about it, and here's what I found.
Plagiarism is the representation of another author's language, thoughts, ideas or expressions as one's own original work.

Types of plagiarism.

There are different types of plagiarism, but the 4 basic ones are;
Source

  • Direct plagiarism: refers to when the plagiarist copies and pasted text from someone else's work and doesn't cite the source or remove quotation marks. This is the most harmful one.

  • Mosaic plagiarism: In this case, the plagiarist may have mentioned the source of the content he has referred to. But if he/she does not acknowledge the quoted part, or put them under the quotation marks correctly, then the writer commits the crime of plagiarism. It is often unintentional.

  • Self plagiarism: is where high school students copy and paste part of their previously submitted academic paper. If the student submits the same paper for two different classes, without asking the concerned teacher, then that is self plagiarism.

  • Accidental plagiarism: this is when the plagiarist misquotes the phrases or parts of the texts he/she hads taken from the source material or does not cite the source adequately or cites a wrong source.

Here's how you can cite a source.

You can use the markup(> ) or the quotation marks (" "). Example:

“He tends to serve himself badly...by focusing his pursuit of happiness on money". Source

To use the markup citation,

"He tends to serve himself badly...by focusing his pursuit of happiness on [money].

Source

Clicking on "source" link will take you to the site where the cited information was gotten.

Plagiarism is harmful and very wrong.
It devalues hardwork and reduces productivity.
Please, let's stop plagiarism.
