It was later changed into the African Union on 9 July 2002 in Durban, South Africa, which the holiday continues to be celebrated on 25 May. African day is celebrated in various countries on the African continent and around the world.
Did you know that Ghana played a central role in the creation of African-Day?

Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African country to gain its freedom from on March 6, 1957, and this gave hope to other African countries. After independence, Ghana, under the leadership of Kwame Nkrumah, organized the first conference of independent African states in Accra, the capital of Ghana, on April 15, 1958.

Independent states that participated were Libya, Ethiopia, Liberia, Morocco, Tunisia, Sudan, the United Republic of Egypt and Ghana. The conference was an important sign because it was the first Pan-African conference and a key step to rejecting colonial and imperialist domination of the continent.

Previously, Africa Day was observed as a statutory holiday in Ghana but Over the past years, it has been observed as a Commemorative Day. It is celebrate in diverse ways by institutions and organizations. Before the the outbreak of covid-19, the day was marked with activities including cultural events, discussions, donations and competitions.
