In order to protect your account from intruders, steemit has provided a personal means of authentication in the form of Keys. Every user has a uniquely generated key assigned to them when they create an account, to carry out various functions on the steemit we use different keys for identification and proof of ownership of account. The key you use is dependent on what function/ activity you're trying to carry out.
It is up to the users to secure these keys in a private place. NOBODY can have access to YOUR account without YOUR keys, be mindful of where you store your keys as the security of your account is in YOUR hands.
Different Keys and their Uses
Posting Key : Basically used to log into your account, this key grants the privilege of posting, commenting, editing, voting, following, muting or unfollowing other accounts on steemit.
Active Key : This key gives permission to carry out transactions like; Fund transfer, power up/ down, conversion of strength dollars,uodating profile details e.t.c.
Owner Key : This is the most powerful key and is to be used only when completely necessary. This key can be used to recover a compromised account.
Memo Key : Used for encrypting and decrypting memos when transferring funds. To encrypt you use the #sign before the memo.
Master Key This key is the father of all keys, all other keys were generated from it. This is the most important key and it's only used for account recovery.
