PLAGIARISM

Definition: Plagiarism is the act of taking some one idea (s) or the representation of someone work as one's own idea without acknowledgement of the initial owner of the idea or taking permission from him/she.
Plagiarism is an act that can be done knowingly or unknowingly. *

People show or do plagiarism in several ways.

Types of plagiarism

There are several types of plagiarism but below are the most common types.

• Direct plagiarism
• Mosaic Plagiarism
• Self-Plagiarism
• Accidental Plagiarism

Direct plagiarism

Most often plagiarists copy a text from someone's work without changing any word from it and claim to be the author of the text copied and/or removing the quotation signs without the citation of the source. This is the most harmful plagiarism among all.

Mosaic Plagiarism

Mosaic plagiarism is a type of plagiarism which is done unintentional, that is, the writer may have mentioned the source of the text copied but did not acknowledge the text in quotes or the text was quoted incorrectly.

Self-plagiarism

Self plagiarism is the act of copying a previously done and/or summited an idea that was already validated (example in case of students) in a previous session for validation in the new session without the permission of validation authorities. For example, a student submitting/or using a project for two separate academic years.

Accidental Plagiarism

"Another common form of plagiarism involves accidental plagiarism. In this type, a writer may misquote the parts of text he/she had copied from the source or cite a wrong source to the text copied.

How to avoid plagiarism.

• Always take note of the research you do online.
• Always quote any texts copied from your sources and add your own ideas.
• Always acknowledge the initial author.
• Check your work with a plagiarism checker before you submit.
