Introduction
Hello everyone, here's my entry for achievement 3 of the tasks and achievement to be complete and today i'll be talking on content etiquette, just like every working society the steemit online society also has its etiquettes and guidelines serving as a means of curbing and limiting offensive or unaccepted behaviors from its users, as clearly stated in the introductory post of achievement 3 by @cryptokannon
It is not sufficient to simply note that “text source is Wikipedia”. A link to the specific Wikipedia page where the content came from is required. If numerous sources were used, adding the source after each separate idea is recommended.
According to Wikipedia etiquette is the set of conventional rules of personal behaviour in polite society, usually in the form of an ethical code that delineates the expected and accepted social behaviours that accord with the conventions and norms observed by a society, a social class, or a social group.
As mentioned earlier steemit online society has a few etiquettes of its own and they include:
- Avoid posting on the platform and ghosting, be active
- Try to not choke up your page by over-posting
- Nudity or graphic imagery aren't permitted unless you tag it with NSFW
- Maintain originality and avoid plagiarism by all costs
- Don't post unrelated links in comments, engage in tag spamming, or re-steem everything you see as it disorganizes the steemit online space generally and might contribute to the misplacement of yours or some other person's post
- Don't directly ask for votes, demand reciprocated votes or bribe people for votes, re-steems, follows or ask directly for money
- Don't ever use @all in the chat or direct message people you don't know in the chat
- Provide appropriate verification
- Always read the rules for the chat channel you are posting in
- Don't flag content just because you disagree or don't like it
- Don't be a stalker or a troll
- Always properly cite materials used
Of all the above listed etiquettes originality of one's work is highly hammerred on and plagiarism greatly frowned upon and even punished by the entire steemit society and should be cautiously avoided. However plagiarism to a new user might seem a little confusing as there are several ways of plagiarism directly or indirectly, these and more etiquettes would be discussed below
What is plagiarism?
Plagiarism simply put is taking someone else's work, thought, ideas or expressions of any sort and presenting or passing it off as one's original work without proper citing's or credit giving to the original author. it is of importance to not that there is a team of steem users @endingplagiarism that helps the Steemit Community to clean all the plagiarized and spam contents and is always on a look out for plagiarized work, and to also note that Plagiarism is cheating, a serious form of academic dishonesty and can be illegal in certain regions and severely punished for practicing.
Types of plagiarism; What are the Different Kinds of Plagiarism?
There are basically four kinds of plagiarism and they incude:
- Direct Plagiarism
- Mosaic Plagiarism
- Self-Plagiarism
- Accidental Plagiarism
Direct plagiarism:
this is the most common type of plagiarism where the plagiarist just copy and paste certain parts of the original's authors work without changing a single word or sometimes changing a few words to theirs, it is the most harmfull as the original author can easily take correctional or disciplinary action against the person who copied their work without proper citation.
Mosaic plagiarism:
this is an unintended form of plagiarism as the plagiarist might have cited or even mentioned the source of the work without properly using quotation marks or even paraphrasing certain parts of peoples work, or lifting certain phrases or lines from an article without changing its structure or properly citing it.
Self-plagiarism:
this is often seen among students, and is the type of plagiarism where a part of a previously published work is lifted by the person to make a new article. That is, copy and pasting your previous work to create a new article. this type of plagiarism might not be punished legally, but is frowned upon as well.
Accidental plagiarism:
this is a type of plagiarism where the plagiarist misquotes lines, phrases or words taken from an authors original work or doesnt cite the source at all, or appropriately or cites a completely wrong source.
ways to avoid plagiarism
- properly cite all works lifted of someone else's article
- ensure works are original
- take notes of how to properly use citations and quotation marks
- paraphase whatever line properly
- employ the use of plagiarism checkers before publishing a post or article
etc
How to cite works properly
First off, citation simply put is giving adequate credit and references to the original author of a word, phrase, line or page you picked an article off of. it should adequately guide your readers as to where you picked it off from, when and what particular context you picked it up on.
when do i cite
As confusing as plagiarism is to certain introductory writers, so is citation. Since citation has been explained earlier here are some simple times to cite moments every basic writer should know;
- cite when a work greatly influenced yours dirctly
- cite when you quote an already published article(idea, words, phrases etc)
Basically the best method for a writer would be to strive for originality thereby minimizing the chances of not citing properly or plagiarism
In conclusion, these etiquettes were placed on the platform to enable swift socializing and failure to adhere to them leads to certain consequences. Plagiarism isn't only frowned upon by the Steemit society but by the entire literary society, so as a Steemit user avoiding it would be to your favor.
I have read and understood the Steemit Etiquette on Steemit Community and will do my best to embrace them
