You may be knee-jerk after reading the title, but yes, the chainsaw was originally invented to aid in childbirth. Before C-sections were commonly used, all babies had to pass through the birth canal. Which certainly makes sense.
But as we all know, children can get in the way if they are small or too big. If children cannot enter or touch the pelvis, parts of the bone and cartridge case are removed to make more room for the child. This is called a "symphysiotomy".
The procedure was originally done by hand with a small knife and saw to remove the bone. All this takes place without anesthesia for the woman in the middle of childbirth. It was long and messy and clearly painful.
Now, if you're shaking, let's get to the chainsaw part. The 13th floor sheds light on this little-known history of this ordinary saw. Two doctors invented the chainsaw in 1780 to make removing the pelvic bone easier and less time consuming during childbirth. It was operated by a hand crank and looked like a modern kitchen knife with small teeth on a chain that wound into an oval. We're sure you're imagining powerful things that can destroy trees in seconds, but luckily, it's a little less scary and looks like a medical device.
