Good day everyone in this wonderful community. You are all welcome to my blog today. Today I'll be telling you guys about plagiarism and reasons why we should stay away from it.
What is plagiarism ?
Plagiarism is basically theft. It is the act of taking someone else's work and passing them off as ones work without reference of any sort to the main author of the work. Some people partake in plagiarism consciously while some do it unconsciously.
Whatever the case maybe ,ignorance is not an excuse and plagiarism is a punishable offense in the law court. It is stealing of intellectual property.
Content etiquette
Contest etiquette is more like a modus operandi. It is literally the rules to follow when creating your own content. The main function is to maintain that the post made by users are virgin ideas and not plagiarised.
If at all they were gotten from some article somewhere ,necessary references should be made to the author.
What are the dangers of plagiarism
- It doesn't encourage good research
- If you are caught you will be penalised
- Steemit doesn't encourage plagiarism and have set strict measures in place against plagiarist
- You can be arrested and charged to court for plagiarism
How to avoid plagiarism
- By keeping record of sources you used while conducting your research
- By making reference to the original author
- By quoting your source
- By using a plagiarism checker before submitting your work
- By avoiding copy and paste
- By writing unique contents
What is citation
Citation is referencing the main owner of a particular work and without claiming ownership of the work. It helps other people when reading your work to be know where you sourced your information from and giving credit to who credit is due.
For example:
Consumer behavior is the study of individuals, groups, or organizations and all the activities associated with the purchase, use and disposal of goods and services. Consumer behaviour consists of how the consumer's emotions, attitudes and preferences affect buying behaviour
Source
Here is an example of something I collected from Wikipedia. I made sure it was obvious that it was not my work and I also placed the link for those who would like to see where I got it from.
What are the types of plagiarism
We have a good number of types of plagiarism but I will be discussing a few
- Complete plagiarism
- Source based plagiarism
- Direct plagiarism
- Paraphrasing plagiarism
- Inaccurate Authorship
- Mosaic plagiarism
- Accidentally plagiarism
Complete plagiarism: This is copying someones work entirely and submitting it as your own and is the most serious type of plagiarism
Direct plagiarism: It involves copying a section of someone's work and pasting it in your work
Paraphrasing plagiarism: Rewriting someone's elses work as your own and making minor changes.
NOTE : Just because the words aren't the same doesn't mean the idea has changed
Inaccurate Authorship: This happens in a group developed content. It happens when someone doesn't get credit for their work or a wrong person gets the credit for another person work.
