THE HUMAN EYE AND VISION

The human eye is an organ of vision or sight which is situated in the orbital cavity. It is spherical in shape. The blood supply to the eye is by the optic nerve. The space between the eyes in the orbital cavity is occupied by the adipose tissue; the bony walls of the orbit and the fat help to protect the eye from injury.

Some Parts of the human eye are;

• Sclera
• Cornea
• Pupil
• Iris
• lens
• Choroid

HOW THE HUMAN EYE WORKS (VISION)

Light rays mirrored from an object or image enter into the eye through the cornea that is a clear window of the eye. The cornea refractive power then narrowed the light rays in such a way that it passes freely through the pupil; the black dot at the center of the eye around the iris.

After passing through the iris, the light rays pass through the eye’s natural crystalline lens; the clear, flexile structure work like the lens in a camera, shortening and lengthening its width which focus light rays on the retina.

The light ray received by the photo receptor on the retina is converted to an inverted image on the retina. The inverted image on the retina is converted to an electrical impulse and transmitted to the rain through the optic nerves. The brain helps us to see the image erect.

Muscles of the eyes	functions
Medial rectus	it rotates the eye inward
Lateral rectus	it rotates the eye outward
Superior rectus	it rotates the eye upwards
Inferior rectus	it rotates the eye downwards
Superior oblique	it rotates the eyeball downward and outward
Inferior oblique	it rotates the eyeball upward and outward.
