Plagiarism is unethical, and it can harm a person's reputation and trustworthiness, particularly in academic or professional contexts.

Intellectual dishonesty: The values of intellectual honesty and academic integrity, which are crucial for the pursuit of knowledge, are undercut by plagiarism.

Loss of Original Thought, Creativity, and Critical Thinking: These are crucial abilities for academic and professional success and can be discouraged by plagiarism.

The reputation of the original author may be damaged by plagiarism.

How to avoid plagiarism

Plagiarism is a significant academic infraction with severe repercussions, such as reputational harm, legal action, and academic sanctions. Following are some pointers for avoiding plagiarism:

Know what plagiarism is: Using someone else's thoughts or work without giving them due credit is plagiarism. This involves copying material, paraphrasing without attribution, and utilizing someone else's remarks without citing them.

utilize citations to give credit where credit is due whenever you utilize someone else's thoughts or words. This requires you to properly cite all sources in your writing, both in-text and in a reference list or bibliography.

If you must borrow someone else's concepts, be careful to frame them in your own words. However, you are required to provide due credit to the original source by properly citing it.

Use plagiarism checkers to find instances of plagiarism in your work. There are several online plagiarism checkers that may help you with this. By using these resources, you can make sure that your work is original.

Draft a plan: Give yourself enough time to complete extensive research and write your piece. Rushing through a task might lead to careless errors and plagiarism.

Use your own words and ideas: Using your own words and ideas is one of the best ways to prevent plagiarism. If you do utilize extra sources, be sure they are.

In-text citation example

The example above has an original sentence:

The following sentence was copied from its source without alteration, so it must be placed in quotation marks.

“Researchers have long been aware of the potential for apple consumption to support balanced populations of bacteria in our lower digestive tract.”

The last sentence is paraphrased information from a different source:
