Here I am again on my @achievement3 . As I get closer to completing my entire task, I feel an energy coming from ten thousand planets away. Okay, maybe I’m over exaggerating… okay, maybe I am just being too weird, you know what? Let’s just get this over with.

PLAGIARISM
Before I certainly go deep into the whole concept of plagiarism, I would first of all ask a rhetorical question; “Why do people steal other peoples work?” You see this is a very important question because to first of all solve a problem, you must first of all know where that problem is coming from. Plagiarism is a big problem. Infact, it is one of the big problems of great writers (like me of course). This is because people whom I may call unprofessional writers or should I say imposters; out of laziness tend to copy works that aren’t theirs and present it to society as theirs for selfish or personal gain. This has suddenly started to become a regular thing in today’s world that the world is paying pretty much less attention than it actually should.
So I have a friend right, his name is Elijah, maybe I shouldn’t have written his name. “Elijah, I hope you never get to read this though.” Elijah claims to be a writer, but you see; what he does, is copy other peoples work, from different sources, edits it, and presents it as his own. And you see, at the end of the day - Elijah gets paid. So here’s the bad news though, Elijah’s boss finds out that the boy he employed, is a scam and most of his work hasn’t been original, because of this, Elijah loses his job as a content writer. Today, Elijah is into BITCOIN in Nigeria. I would have said he is doing pretty well in crypto but... he is absolutely is not – just like me. Hey, don’t worry I won’t let Elijah join the STEEM community. You all are safe with your original content. Hehehe…

WHAT IS PLAGIARISM
Plagiarism is when one presents a work that is not originally his own as his own for personal benefits or gains. We can also mean to say that plagiarism is when one intentionally or unintentionally copies a work which is not owned by himself and presenting it for personal benefits without making nessesory references, citations, paraphrasing and acknowledgement to the original work.

"Plagiarism is presenting someone else’s work or ideas as your own, with or without their consent, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement." Source

This is a very common thing in some universities especially in Nigeria. Let’s take Ebonyi State University for example, when students talk about doing their project work, they simply talk about plagiarism, this is because very few students are able to write projects these days, I mean I was among them so I know what I am talking about.
Plagiarism is an offence. If we understand what an offence means, we would also understand that an offence attracts a punishment or penalty. This offence is so because there is something we call “copyright” this protects the right of lawful authors or original owners of a text. Those who are caught practicing plagiarism will face the law guiding it.

THERE ARE VARIOUS TYPES OF PLAGIARISM

Mosaic plagiarism
This is when a writer or a person is copying the work or content of another writer exactly the way it is without using a quotation mark or goes ahead to remove some words from the sentence and leaving the original content.

Direct plagiarism
This is the adoption of the text from another person’s writing and copies from the text without even changing one word, it just becomes exactly as it was copied. This is considered the most dangerous of them all. Copying and pasting another person’s work without duly citing the source

Accidental Plagiarism
This is when one takes or copies and pastes a work of a writer’s content and misquotes the citing source or when one misquotes part of the content itself mistakenly. This can also be called the unintentional plagiarism. It is important to note, ignorance is no excuse to not doing the right thing.

How to avoid plagiarism

  • Staying committed to doing the work assigned to you by yourself.

  • Consistency in writing.

  • Citing works that have been copied.

  • Quoting contents that are not yours.

  • Having a clear understanding of paraphrasing.

Once one starts plagiarism, one becomes very drawn to copying to the extent that it becomes almost addictive that one cannot truly rely on his own ideas.
Alright. I hope this works.
