VOLCANOES: NATURAL DISASTERS OR SERENE LANDSCAPE?

To ascertain the answer to this question let's consider the following.

WHAT ARE VOLCANOES

Volcanoes are openings in the crust of the earth which allows hot lava, volcanic ash and gases to escape from a magma chamber below the surface of the earth.

HOW ARE VOLCANOES FORMED?

• Volcanoes occur because of the spaces between tectonic plates known as VENTS.

• Volcanoes also occur as a result of the heat from the Earth's core which melts part of the mantle into magma.

• The temperature and pressure increases theerby causing the melted magma to rise and escape/erupt through the vents.

TYPES OF VOLCANOES

• CINDER CONES VOLCANOES

• COMPOSITE VOLCANOES

• SHIELD VOLCANOES

• LAVA DOMES VOLCANOES

CINDER CONES VOLCANOES

"These are the simplest types of volcanoes. They are built from particles and blobs congealed lava ejected from a single vent" ^Source They are 'simple' doesn't make them adorable. In the year 1943 a cinder cone started growing near a village farm of Parìcutin in Mexico. "An explosive eruption from the volcano caused by gas rapidly expanding and escaping from molten lava formed cinders that fell back around the vent, making the cone attain a height of 1,200 feet. The last explosive left a funnel shaped crater at the top of the cone"" ^Source If you want to see one of these for yourself, you can do so by visiting Western North America, as there are numerous amazing cinder cones there, as well as through out other volcanic terrains of the world.

COMPOSITE VOLCANOES

"This volcanoe, most commonly known as stratovolcanoe is one of the Earth's grandest mountains"" ^Source

They are called stratovolcanoes because the word 'strato' means steps. These types of volcanoes consist of alternating layers of hardened ash, lava and volcanic rocks. These volcanoes can attend a height of about 8000 m. That's quite high!

SHIELD VOLCANOES

^{Image Source} Why is it called shield volcanoes well that is because this volcano is formed in such a way that it resembles a warriors shield that is lying on the ground.

It is formed by the eruption of highly fluid low-viscosity lava which travels farther and forms thinner flows than the more well-known viscous lava erupted from a stratovolcano. It it is however interesting to know that shield volcanoes can be found on other planets of the solar system which include Olympus mons on Mars and Sapas mons on Venus." ^Source

LAVA DOMES VOLCANOES

"This is any steep sided mound that is formed when lava in the Earth's surface is so viscous that it(the lava) cannot flow away readily and accumulates around the vent " ^Source . Now this is amazing! The lava from the volcano is so sticky that it doesn't flow away, instead it just keeps gathering around the vent of the volcano, but when it is time to erupt, trust me it's flows.

One of the largest known volcanic domes is that which makes up the upper part of the Lassen peak in Northern California " ^Source

The Lassen dome rises more than 600m (2,000 feet) and has a diameter of approximately 3.2km (2 miles)" ^Source . Thinking of this height alone gives me goose bumps. So what do you think? Are volcanoes natural disasters or Serene landscapes? Well the answer depends on you as an individual.
