I KNOW THAT WE ARE ALL FAMILIAR TO THE CRYPTO BULL RUN BUT LET'S DIVERSIFY FOR A BIT AND LEARN A LITTLE MORE ABOUT OUR MOTHER LAND AND AGRICULTURE

Going through the guidelines for the achievement 4 task here has given me the requirements to complete my achievement 4 task so lets get down to, ‘The Cropping system in Agriculture.’

CROPPING SYSTEM

A crop is basically any plant grown, cultivated and harvested by man for food or for its end product use.

So cropping systems are sequence or techniques used in crop growth or production. I would introduce you to 5 types of this techniques and how their importance helps in maintaining soil fertility and how combining this practices enhances crop growth and stability.

TYPES OF CROPPING SYSTEM

1. Mono cropping
2. Sequential cropping
3. Crop rotation
4. Inter cropping

1. MONO-CROPPING

This refers to an agricultural practice where a single crop is grown year after year on the same piece of land without the introduction of other types of crop. Here, a piece of land is used for the cultivation of only one crop e.g only maize is grown on that piece of land during that farming year

Mb: As things are about to get a little a little bit complex lets get familiar with this cropping terms.

CROP TERMS

A. Crops: plants grown by man for their end use.

B. Farming year: a given period between the plantation and harvesting of a crop.

C. Row cultivation: cultivation of crops in rows

2.a SEQUENTIAL- CROPPING

This is basically a cropping system where two or more crops are grown in succession on the same piece of land within a particular farming year. Here, a piece of land is used immediately for the cultivation of another crop after the preceeding crop has been harvested all within the same farming year

Mb: Lets get a bit more intense and talk about Ratoon Cropping

2.b RATOOM-CROPPING

Is a sub-sequential cropping method where the second crops are grown as a result of the regrowth of the first crop. examples of the crops that ratoon are some of the foods we are familiar with eg:
SERIESCROPS
ARice
BSugar Cane
CBanana
DPlantain

3. CROP-ROTATION

“Crop rotation is the practice of growing a series of different types of crops in the same area in sequential seasons" source of citation

Here different crops are grown year after year but in a particular order e.g. maize(corn) is grown in the first farming year then soybean in the next farming year and that partisequence is done repeatedly with that particular sequence.

ADVANTAGES

  1. For pests and diseases control
  2. To Improve soil organic matter
  3. To increase soil yield
  4. To control soil nutrients
  5. To prevent soil erosion

4. INTER-ROTATION

Inter cropping is a companion planting cropping system that involves the growing of one crop alongside another in other to improve bioiversity and improve crop yield.

Here there are three(3) classifications namely;

A. Mixed Cropping: we are very familiar with this type and it involves the the cultivation of a variety of compatible crops together

B. Row/Alley Cropping: judging from the name here a series of different crops are planted alongside each other in rows.

C. Temporal Inter-cropping: where a faster growing crop is cultivated alongside a slower growing one.

Before we conclude let me open up your world to a common term, ‘Mutualism’

5. MUTUALISM

This is a term used in agriculture to explain the process of cultivation of two or more crops in a very close proximity.
