WHAT IS PLAGIARISM
source image by pexel-photo.
Although the definition of plagiarism differs depending on the institution.
According to Merriam -Webster, plagiarism is a Latin word plagiarius meaning kidnapper. And the word plagiarius is derived from another Latin word plaga(a net used by hunters to catch game)source. Thus, plagiarism is the term used to an act of stealing other peoples work, /information without giving proper citation or reference to the original author.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PLAGIARISM & CITATION
Unlike plagiarism as defined in the above paragraph, citation is an act of attributing the credit of work that is not ours to the original author/source. Therefore the difference between the plagiarism and citation is that the absence of making reference to a work that is not ours is plagiarism while the presence of referencing the work that is not ours is citation. Simply put stealing other peoples work or failing to give proper citation or quote to the original author is plagiarism. We can make more than one citation to different scholarly/professional text.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF PLAGIARISM
Lindsay Kramer updated on June 2, 2022source mentioned 7 types of plagiarism. These include:
-Complete plagiarism... This is yet another serious Plagiarism where a writer
pay someone else to write a paper and summit it as if it was it own without making reference to the writers. Simply put, summiting someone work as your own.
-Direct plagiarism... this is similar to complete plagiarism, but the differenc is while the entire work is being plagiarized in complete plagiarism, direct plagiarism only specific paragraph are included without acknowledging the author.
-Paraphrasing plagiarism... this is taking someone work, change some few words or phrases and then present it as your own work.
-Self plagiarism... Even though you are the owner, and the words are your original thought , self plagiarism mostly occurs when writing professionally and you reuse your own words for subsequent client without giving citation to your previous work.
-Patchwork plagiarism... this is also known as mosaic plagiarism this is when a writer interwoven original work with a plagiarized work. They borrowed phrases without quotation.
-Source-based plagiarism... this occurs mostly when the writer uses many sources. Though the writer might mention the sources but fails to mention it correctly or even make up a false source.
-Accidental plagiarism ... this happen when the writer doesn't realize they're plagiarizing another work. For instance, forgetting to cite or not citing your sources correctly and failing to put quotes around cited materials.
