What is plagiarism?
Plagiarism is a serious problem where someone turns other’s work as their own. In today’s world where every one has easy access to internet, databases, telecommunications it has become very easy to copy paste other’s contents, research , pictures, videos etc without giving them credit. It is unethical and illegal.
Types of plagiarism
There are different types of plagiarism and let’s talk about some common and important ones.
Direct plagiarism
Direct plagiarism is when someone copies word to word from others work, without giving the attribution and quotation mark. It is unethical, dishonest and actions to discipline them should be taken.
Mosaic plagiarism
Mosiac plagiarism happens when you’ve written everything yourself but copies phrases from somewhere else without giving quotation marks. To avoid such plagiarism one should either give the quotation or write the phrases and titles themselves.
Self plagiarism
Using someone else’s work is wrong and so is reusing work which has already been submitted or published by you. When you use the same idea , data or phrases from your previous work without citing your old work, it is self plagiarism.
Source based plagiarism
When we give misleading sources, it is also plagiarism. For example if take contents or data from various sources and only reference some of the sources. We cannot fabricate sources as it misleading and can be harmful.
Paraphrasing
Let us talk the most common type of plagiarism. Paraphrasing is changing a few words in someone’s work without changing the original idea of the content and passing it as own work.
How can we avoid plagiarism?
We can avoid plagiarism by giving correct accreditation and by citing the sources which we have used for the information and data. We should use our own idea for our works and not copy.We can also use a plagiarism checker.
