Many writers instead of being creative by using ideas emanating from their brains prefer copying other peoples' works without a valid authorization or reference. Just as done while typing with a computer, they copy and paste a particular work from its original source without permission.

According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, to "plagiarize" means:
~to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own
~to use (another's production) without crediting the source
~to commit literary theft
~to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source.
In other words, plagiarism is an act of fraud. It involves both stealing someone else's work and lying about it afterward.

The origin of the word 'Plagiarism' has been lost in antiquity. But however "in the 1st century, the use of the Latin word "plagiarius" (literally "kidnapper") to denote stealing someone else's creative work was pioneered by the Roman poet Martial, who complained that another poet had "kidnapped his verses".

Thus, Plagiarism didn't raise its ugly head in this decade but too many centuries ago and at each time has been recognized as being an anomaly that should be frowned at.
These are the 5 most common types of plagiarism:

~Global plagiarism means plagiarizing an entire text by someone else.
~Verbatim plagiarism means directly copying someone else’s words.
~Paraphrasing plagiarism means rephrasing someone else’s ideas.
~Patchwork plagiarism means plagiarizing parts of different sources and stitching them together into a new work.
~Self-plagiarism means recycling your own previous work.

Examples or manifestations of Plagiarism include the following:
~Turning in someone else's work as your own.
~Copying large pieces of text from a source without citing that source.
~Taking passages from multiple sources, piecing them together, and turning in the work as your own.
~Copying from a source but changing a few words and phrases to disguise plagiarism.
~Paraphrasing from a number of different sources without citing those sources.
~Turning in work that you did for another class without getting your professor's permission first.
~Buying an essay or paper and turning it in as your own work.

In Nigeria, the Copyright Act has been enacted to checkmate and put plagiarism to a halt. A writer or any person whose artistic work was stolen or used without his consent could carry our a legal action with heavy reliance on the aforementioned Act.
However, Plagiarism can be avoided totally. Ways of avoiding Plagiarism include the following:

  1. Be creative, think outside the box.
  2. Study, make out time to read.
  3. Be confident in your intellectual ability.
  4. If you must copy a person's work, you must acquire his authorization.
  5. If he is not within reach, you must give reference to him and his work.

Conclusively, Plagiarism remains a totally objectionable act and should be expunged in Steemit Community lock, stock and barrel. All hands must be on deck to achieve this.

Having read and understood the Steemit Etiquette on Steemit Community, I Will try my very best to stand by it.
