WHAT IS PLAGIARISM?

It simply means adopting someone else work or information as your own without giving credit to the source.

Mariam Webster online dictionary defined plagiarism as "an act of stealing someone else ideas and using it as if it is my own".

There are various types of plagiarism namely direct plagiarism, self-plagiarism, accidental plagiarism, and mosaic plagiarism.

DIRECT PLAGIARISM

Direct plagiarism is the act of copying and pasting an author's work without citation and acknowledgement. Direct plagiarism is the repetition of words or work of another author. Direct plagiarism is an intentional act and it is punishable by law.

Self-plagiarism self-plagiarism is a repetition of one's work that was done previously by the same person without adding some unique to it because the subject matter share something in common.

ACCIDENTAL PLAGIARISM

accidental plagiarism happens due to negligence of the writer. The writer due to rush might not remember to proofread a material before publishing and when that happens the writer has failed to give credit to whom the words where borrowed from. To avoid such mistake it is important to highlight every material gotten from an author's work before publishing..

MOSAIC PLAGIARISM

mosaic plagiarism is define as the borrowing of phrases from an author without using quotation mark "to emphasize the word. In a mosaic plagiarism using a footnote without adding quotation mark to the word or phrase is still an offence of copyright.

Plagiarism is a criminal offence that comes with legal sanctions on the offender. Anyone can be guilty of plagiarism regardless of the title or position you hold in the society a journalist, professor, politician, students or even a pastor can fall victim of plagiarism if what he or she publishes does not acknowledge or give credit to the author of which the words or phrases were gotten from.

• Those who hold reputable offices or titles who are found a plagiarist face legal action such as imprisonment find or both.

• A plagiarist find it difficult after being fired from an office or place of work to find a well-paying job.

How To Avoid Plagiarism

There are measures one can take to avoid being a victim of plagiarism;

  1. Before publishing my article or material the source of that article should be cited and giving reference.

  2. Obtain permission from the author before publishing material.

  3. Rewrite the article using your own words.

  4. Use plagiarism checker to cross check your work such as Small SEO.

• A students a student who first victim of plagiarism can be expelled, suspended or even failed the course outrightly.
It is sad to know that a student who is a victim of this act will find it difficult securing admission in any reputable college
repetition.
