Hi my good people of steemit. I would like to appreciate all your efforts to my achievements 1&2 tasks which have been verified and in a special way appreciating the hasty responds of the admin(s) towards verifying my achievement task posts without encountering any delay. Today, I would be constructing my achievements 3 task on content etiquette which centered on Plagiarism.

Hitherto, we have been conversant with copyright protection law which has plaid a vital role in publication sector such as books, articles, journals, novels, projects to mention but a few, which has kept these publications to be original and remain rightfully owned by the author thereby depriving unauthorized infringement by any means either electronically or manually replication or manipulation. This copyright law made it clear that claiming ownership of documents or replicating a documents that were not originally constructed by you which is known as plagiarism is a punishable offense.

What is Plagiarism?

Plagiarism is a situation whereby an individual or group of person(s) replicate, manipulate, or claim ownership of publication(s) which was not originally constructed by the individual or group without proper citation.

The following are examples of plagiarism:

  • Manipulating an academic project thereby changing the owner’s personal details to your own and submitting it as your written project without citation.
  • Electronically or manually publication of someone’s content(s) without proper citation.
  • Posting someone’s content to gain popularity without citing the owner.
Exam malpractice is also another form of plagiarism in academic context. Example, like a student snatching his/her fellow student’s answer script, filling up his/her details and submitting it as his or hers.

Full Plagiarism:

In full plagiarism, the individual will conclude that since the contents of the work portray everything he/she intends achieving, there would be no need of stress thereby trying to make it looks original and that all he/she has to do is to go ahead publishing it.

Unintentional Plagiarism:

In unintentional plagiarism, the person lacks total knowledge of what plagiarism is all about and thinks that since he/she has seen a good content that solve his/her research problem, it is an opportunity for him/her to go shortcut by making use of the content without further delay.

Partial Plagiarism:

In partial plagiarism, the individual may apply the knowledge of getting contents from different authors and compiling them to produce a complete content which he/she may claim to have been constructed by himself or herself. This type of plagiarism can be sported in academic projects mostly as students would not like much stress in carryout proper research.

Minimalistic Plagiarism:

In this type of plagiarism, a similarity can be affirmed to that of partial plagiarism only that the researcher may try paraphrasing some contents of the work to his or her likings grammatically or otherwise making it to look free from plagiarism.

Self-Plagiarism:

Self-plagiarism is like self-theft where one will intentionally replicate his or her published work either to save time or meet a target which requires little or few time to publish. Though the author may try making some changes but still, lacks originality as when compared to the source.

If one wishes to add more values to his publication by getting contents from other sources, it is expected of such person to make appropriate citation of those sources where those contents were originated and by so doing, such publication would be free from plagiarism which is considered as criminal offense under copyright law.

How You Can Apply Citation To Your Publication.

You can successfully cite a content gotten from another source to your publication by using the Greater Than Sign (>) at the beginning of the content’s sentence which will format the content in a quoted formatting style.

Example:

”The consequences of plagiarism vary depending on the type of plagiarism and the context in which it occurs. For example, submitting a whole paper by someone else will have the most severe consequences, while accidental citation errors are considered less serious.” Source

Effect of Plagiarism

Just like how other criminal offences could have a significant effect to our prospect, plagiarism can also have a significant effect to our carrier. For example, in academic context, if a student is caught plagiarizing during exams or project research, such student may face expulsion punishment or may asked to repeat class thereby disqualifying him graduating with his buddies.

How Then Do We Avoid Plagiarism?

We can avoid plagiarism in our publications by not falling victim of the followings:
