This castle is one of the historical site in the
history of valladolid in Spain.
Today I went there for a visit, but unfortunately it was closed.
And I want to share the amazing history behind it.
About the castle
Fernando III the Saint instituted the dominion of Peñafiel for his son Alfonso Xel Sabio(the wise) , who transferred it to his nephew, and grandson of the holy king, the infant Juan Manuel. This was the one who took care of the rebuilding of the castle and the walled enclosure in the first half of the 14th century. Somewhere later, when Pedro Ibecame the King of the Castile, the lordship was abolished and their property became royal property.
The castle passed from Juan I to the hands of Fernando de Antequera, and from this to his son Juan II of Aragón. While Juan was still an infant, he resided in the castle for some time, so that his first son, Carlos, prince of Viana, was born there (1421). In it he also starred in a revolt against Juan II of Castile, who took it in 1451 and ordered its demolition.
The current castle was built in the 15th century, since in 1456 Juan II himself granted Pedro Téllez Girón, Master of the Order of Calatrava, the rights to the remains of the fortress and entrusted its rebuilding to him. It was rebuilt following the model of a castle called the Valladolid school. Upon the death of Pedro Girón, whose shields hover over the keep, a wall and an interior moat were added and the parapets and the north tower were reformed for the use of artillery.
In 1999 the Provincial Wine Museum was inaugurated, which received 86,553 visitors in 2017.
