RESPIRATION

Respiration refers to the process by which atmospheric oxygen is delivered to the tissues for metabolism, and carbon dioxide produced by the tissues is expelled into the atmosphere. The role of the respiratory system in the lungs is to deliver atmospheric oxygen to the venous blood in the pulmonary capillaries, in exchange for carbon dioxide from the tissues. Oxygenated blood circulates throughout the body's tissues through the systemic circulation. When it reaches the tissues, oxygen leaves the capillaries and enters the tissues, where it is used for the final breakdown of nutrients. The carbon dioxide produced as it leaves the cells enters the capillaries and is sent to the right ventricle of the heart, which pumps blood to the lungs.

RESPIRATORY PROCESSES

The following are processes that can be used to explain the mechanism of respiration that occurs in the respiratory system.

Pulmonary ventilation

This is inhalation and exhalation, or external breathing. We are all familiar with this. It is characterized by expansion of the intercostal muscles and relaxation of the intercostal muscles in the chest cavity.

RESPIRATORY FAILURE

Respiratory failure refers to the failure of oxygen supply to tissues caused by failure of the respiratory process or disturbance of the balance of alveolar blood and air volume entering the lungs (pleurosity), or both. This type of condition of lack of oxygen in the lungs is known as hypoxia.
