Good day steemians, here is my achievement3 post, it's about plagiarism, do you know what it means??, Here is what I know and how I got to know about it..
I remember the first day I heard the word plagiarism, it was in my first year in college, in a bus en route to school, this man,l so obsessed in his phone call he didn't know he was shouting, it was really disturbing at first but I was later distracted by the ambiguous words he spewed while he conversed. I guess he was an academic because he had this very rich and impeccable vocabulary, the kind akin to academics.
I remember his words " this is wickedness, it is not fair!, it is not fair!, these plagiarists should be arrested !!" .He had this look of mixed anger and gloom ,he sounded like one in pain , as if something grave had happened, so I enquired from my neighbor what a plagiarists meant, he simply said " a plagiarist is a criminal, a thief". It formed my initial default idea of a plagiarist and plagiarism as theft. Over the years , I have come to understand that plagiarism or a plagiarist isn't a regular thief that steals stuffs from shops or homes, but a much more defined and distinguished kind of theft, the literary kind
PLAGIARISM is therefore stealing someone's idea or literary work(text, image, etc). a plagiarist is one who uses people's idea or literary work without acknowledging or giving credit to the original owner.
just like in academia and the world all over ,the steemit platform abhors plagiarism but encourages creativity and originality, hence the concept "PROOF OF BRAIN". proof of brain in steemit is a concept that steemit employs to mean rewarding people for their ingenuity or originality(using their brains) in their contents.
Because of its quest for original and quality post, and it's disdain for plagiarism, it admonishes all users to give credit to people whose work we use in our contents, we do this by citing or putting a source to our contents that includes people's work, be it images, text etc . For citation we put the texts in quotes("") and add a source link afterwards or use the markup (>) to format the text and put a source link. here is an example for clarity
"But can words and ideas really be stolen?
According to U.S. law, the answer is yes. The expression of original ideas is considered intellectual property and is protected by copyright laws, just like original inventions. Almost all forms of expression fall under copyright protection as long as they are recorded in some way (such as a book or a computer file).
source"
it is really important we cite our sources. apart from the fact that it is professional, we would be hurting the original owners if we don't( like the man I met in the bus almost crying), and we also stand the risk of being called thieves or even penalized.
I'm happy I've come to know this , and apart from this I'm proud to also say that
