ACHIEVEMENT 2 POST @SEANYBOO TASK: BASIC SECURITY ON STEEMIT

in hive-172186 •  3 years ago

Hello Steemians! I hope you are all doing fine. It's been a while since my achievement 1 post got verified and I was looking forward to writing my achievement 2 post but I had an exam coming up so I had to take some time off. Now, I am back with my achievement 2 post which is on the security of steemit keys and their functions.

First, on signing up on steemit, I downloaded a document containing all steemit keys with their various functions and I was made to understand that the keys needed to be kept safe. I ensured this by first of all writing all the keys into a private notebook then saving the document in an encrypted folder backed up to my Google drive.

It is important to understand the risks involved in not keeping one's steemit keys properly or getting them revealed to thirdparties. If these keys get exposed, there is a tendency of losing total access to one's account or even worse, losing all assets on one's account.

Steemit Keys and Their Functions

There are five basic keys on steemit:

  1. Posting key.
  2. Active key.
  3. Owner key.
  4. Memo key.
  5. Master password.

Posting Key

This is the key used for logging in to the steemit account daily. This is the key with the least authority level as it has a limited set of permissions and can only be used to perform basic daily activities such as posting, commenting, and voting. It can also be used to log in to steemit apps. It can not be used to perform monetary actions.

Active Key

This key is used to perform monetary-related actions, like transferring steem, powering STEEM up or down, converting SBD.

Owner Key

This is a very important key that can be used to change all other keys. It can also be used to recover a compromised account. Because of its high level of authority, it is advisable to properly store this key offline.

Memo Key

This key can only be used to send and view encrypted messages.

Master Password

Master Password is the one used to generate all the other keys. Upon signing up, the user is given a password known as the master password which is used to generate all other keys. Master Password is also used when going through the account recovery process.
