Don't just copy content - give credit where credit is due!

Whenever publishing content that stems not from your original thoughts or craft, make sure to cite the sources which you got the information and quotes from. Citing other people on whose content you relied on goes a long way in acknowledging the hard work of others. Not only is plagiarizing (read: publishing content that you not made by yourself but copied from another person) unethical and generally frowned upon in the creator economy, it can be plainly illegal.
Reason being: When you are infringing another person's copyright, you may face legal action (Source.)

See what I did there? I just put a hyperlink into my text to point to another person's content that I relied upon in crafting this sentence.

You can use the hyperlink versions of quoting as an easy and straightforward way to cite external sources. For even better readability, you can add a "> "before a quote to visually divide it from your original content:

"Write with the door closed, rewrite with the door open. " - Stephen King (Source)

Another, quite elegant way is using footnotes. Implement a footnote by typing "[an ongoing number]" behind the word where you want your footnote to appear. An the end of your text, write "[the same number]:", followed by your reference. To format the footnote in superscript, place the characters you want to write in superscript between two HTML tags as follows:

the text you want to appear in superscript

I'll show this technique to you by citing the source where I learned about this markdown technique[1]. Please see the end of this article for the footnoted references.

So, it is really a matter of style if you rely on in-text citations using the hyperlink technique or if you go down the more elegant road and implement footnotes. Just make sure you are always citing external sources and giving credit where credit is due.

Cheers,
tango-mike
